So we're going to look at some classic lighting now 45 degree lighting with beauty shock to box, umbrella, and softbox. And we're also going to look at beauty lighting, direct lighting, with a beauty dish and up to box, an umbrella and a softbox. So let's just have a look at that and see how that comes out. So what we're going to do now is we're going to look at some 45 degree lighting. And what we've got here is we started with a beauty dish. let's actually go and have a look at the light and see how we've set that up.

So what we've got here is we've got a beauty dish above and slightly tilted down the subjects head but not by much just enough to give us a pleasing down light. And it's quite close beauty dishes tend to have to come in quite close. To create the rap. We're going to need to create that really strong look. Now we're actually lighting this with an open loop lighting pattern. Again, in the portait photography course, you'll understand what we're talking about if you're new to this, but we've got this open loop on this side, this open loop light pattern.

So what we've got here is just one night. So what can we achieve with one light? Well, this is very dramatic, but what I want to do is just show you what happens when we change the light modifier with a one light shot on the same image. So now we've got the beauty dish, so you get quite a soft, nice wrap. So now we've got a large box of box, it's a larger light source, we've got more light on the right hand side more wrap, because it's a larger source. And if we have a look now at the studio itself, we set some very large light source we brought in quite close and that's the reason we're getting the wrap on the face because all this light from the edges is wrapping around.

I'm a big fan of octave boxes. Love the lightning produce. And this is a big one, most of them are not that big. If you don't have one that's this big, don't worry, just bring you up to box in, bring it in a little bit closer, and that will duplicate the size and then turn your power down. what you will have is a slight hotspot in the center with the smaller, pop two boxes with the bigger ones, their whites are pulling them back and even the light out. So that's a large box, the one light of 45 degrees and the subject.

Again, all these images are being shot full face rather than to fers or profile for illustration purposes, but this is a standard lighting setup. For a full face shot with a 45 degree angle right now we've used an umbrella. Now a lot of the time people don't necessarily have the money for large otter boxes like that and if you don't umbrella can give Very similar results. As you can see, he's not getting quite the same a wrap, it probably want to increase the power a little bit on this one to bring that up. So it's the same sort of brightness as the other one, but you get very similar results. And then if we have a look, we can see that that is in the same position.

And it's quite simple and straightforward. And sometimes, you just have to start with what you've got to make do with what you've got. So our next example now is a softbox. Now the softbox is creating a harder shadow on the other side. So let's have a look at the softbox and see why this is doing this. So we can see this is not a huge softbox is quite a narrow little softbox.

This is sort of a standard softbox you're going to get in a lot of studios, and that's creating quite a directional light. has given us this harder shadow on the side of the face over here. Because it's much more directional, the large octave box was bigger and more light was reaching this side of the face and we was getting a softer light even the umbrella was given as a little bit more fell than this. So now we're going to switch our lighting up and we're going to look at one light beauty lighting. So in this one, we're just using a standard beauty dish. Let's have a look at how we've set that up.

So as we can see, we're shooting full face. But now we're using butterfly lighting or beauty lighting, as it's often known, and that's going to give us pay a light that brings out the front of the face here. very flattering for the ladies, and we're going to get a lovely highlighter down the front of the nose and the shadows are going to appear we can soften this look By adding more lights, I'm gonna show you some variations as we go through. But that's a classic scenario with a beauty dish. Remember, all of this is available a set plans if you're wondering how big the boxes are, what the measurements are, what the distances are, you've got all the PDFs in the course. So you can look at each of those.

And really go over the details if you want to. And as well when it comes to setting up your own studio, the settings are pretty much there and available so you can copy them. You have to adjust them for the light power used in virtual studio here compared to your light kits because obviously, we can't make a training course for every variation of light so we have to use a standard and if yours is slightly below power or slightly above power, just adjust all your lights by the amount you feel need to be adjusted to get a correct exposure. I will mention obviously we have another course called understanding exposure So if you're not too sure how to get a correct exposure, please check that photography course as well. So what we've got here is beauty lighting, now we've changed it. And now we've gone with a small OtterBox.

Let's just look at their variation there. So that was the beauty that is very directional is really lighting up front. Now on up to boxes lighting up the front is bringing in a lot more in around the shade. And obviously we get some on the background as well. So let's have a look at that. As you can see, we've got a reasonable size up to box, and it's gonna give us a lot more wrap because it's a larger light source, but you can see that every light is in the same place.

And if you're wondering, you know how we get the lights up here, you need a boom arm. This software doesn't render boom arm so I can't show you what it looked like. You just need a boom arm and that will get the light up there for you. So let's have a look. Now this is the art About now we've used an umbrella again, we'll get more rap. Now as you can see, as we go along, we seem to get a little bit more rap and this isn't necessarily quite as pleasing.

But it's not bad if this is all you've got, you've got an umbrella you can see you can get some quite beautiful skin tones, and like just using a simple umbrella. So let's just have a look at that. See if how that works. Again, you can see is exactly the same. We're just shooting the main light into the bridge of the nose. And then we're getting some wrap from the rest of the umbrella.

So let's have a look now at a softbox. So let's just compare the two. But that was our umbrella. Now we've got our softbox let's have a look at that. And you can see we've got a medium sized softbox we're getting quite a bit of rap on our subject and you can see what shooting Just below the softbox. And with the larger soft boxes, sometimes they can be very close to the lens.

So what I want to do now is now we've seen all those, let me go back to the beginning. And let's just flick through them all and see what we've got. So we started with 45 degree light, we had a beauty dish and then we use a large ahktar and we use an umbrella and we use a softbox. Then we switched to butterfly lighting or beauty lighting. And we started with beauty dish. We then follow that with the OtterBox which was a large light source.

Then we have the umbrella which was scattering light, much less controlled. And then we had a small softbox so that's classic one light 45 degree angle and open loop typically and straight on butterfly lighting setup. So hope you found that useful to see the differences when you try and different types of modifiers on exactly the same image.
