In this video, let's talk about how to be more creative because creativity is an intelligence. It's a way of solving things with new ways. In this video, let's talk about how to be more creative how all of us can become more creative. and creativity is, is one of the intelligences that a part of creativity is certainly solving challenges and problems in new unique ways. So it's part of problem solving. Creativity is more than that, but certainly for intelligence, and in the business world, it's that's where creativity really comes into play.
Well, other places too. So let's get into it first. What exactly is it it's one of those things that is so hard to define, because it's kind of everything, and everyone has its own definition. So I try to put together a kind of a comprehensive definition for you. So let's go over. First of all, it's stepping out what's already been done and creating your own new thoughts and ideas.
Okay, so it's stepping out of the old and doing something new. And think about think about it this way that, let's say you had an idea today, it was totally new and novel, and you're using that. But tomorrow, you can't settle on that you can't be relying on using that idea because thinking of that is creative, because tomorrow, that's the old already. today. That's a new idea. Tomorrow, this idea or a week from now, this idea becomes old.
And it's a little bit faulty, to keep on going back to it as though it's new. Because you got to get out you got to challenge yourself more, to get more new ideas for yourself. So you always want to be on the lookout for the new things that were new, becoming stale, and still always forging forward to find new things, new new ways of looking at things. And just like I mentioned earlier, a part of intelligence is where you solve a problem. problems in new and unique ways. So that's creativity creating something new.
Okay? Now a couple of rules of thumb rule of thumb one is that when your mind is unencumbered, when it's not overly busy, it by default naturally looks for idle ideas and in novelty, okay, so it's actually when it's not too busy, it means some stimulation and it looks for novelties and a new idea. But when you are stressed, and when your mind is working, and when it's fully occupied, it doesn't do that. It looks for the simplest and most straightforward solutions to problems. So you see that so right away the easiest, easy way for you to become more creative in how you approach everything is instead of just zeroing in on focusing, because focusing is really great for accomplishing a task, okay? But creativity is more where you give your give your mind the space, that to be less stressed.
And when it's less stressed, then it looks for a novel new ways. Okay? So focus is more about performing a task that you already know how to do it. And creativity is about an encumbering your mind to look for novel ways to accomplish it. Now, rule of thumb to sometimes people do is combine two very unrelated things. And together that combine something to really be creative, because nobody has done that combination before.
By themselves. Those things are not creative, they're old, but as a combination, they're new. That can start as simple as literally combining two basic words into one funny one, and I'm sure everyone's seen that in books, even on social Immediate people do this all the time. And that's the simplest thing you can do today. And the hardcore thing is to combine expertise in complex fields. Of course, let me give you an example.
So the creator of Dilbert, he was saying he said that he wasn't he wasn't really good at cartoons. And he wasn't really good at comedy. He knew he wasn't going to become the best comic and he knew that he wasn't going to be the best artist or cartoonist. So what did he do? He combined these two fields together and made something unique, which is that very popular, maybe one of the most popular cartoons of all time, comic cartoons, Dilbert. And that's essentially what he did.
He combined two things for he was not great, but Oh, good. And together, he was able to do something really new and novel and creative. That was his and that really did well. So that's kind of an example that he was very creative. And at the same time, combined to pretty different fields. Now, what are some easy wins?
When you go to nature, if you go to nature for days, it's even better. But if you go to nature even for 30 minutes, or even a park outside or for a walk, your brain chemistry is going to change a little bit. That's a more natural environment for our brains. That's what we're used to as cavemen, that kind of thing. So your brain will naturally start to relax, and it will start to wander. That's the number one easiest way to start just to relax your brain.
You should also become easy and comfortable being alone with your thoughts without your phone without anyone else. Just kind of like thinking being idle, and things just gonna pop into your brain. You just have to give yourself idle time. There's little exercises you can do like doodling pictures. If you like pictures you can write stream of consciousness. You know, basically like a mind, dump on a piece of paper, see what comes out.
And you can practice associating unrelated things, just random practicing. Just associations, pick two random things, see how they can work together, maybe Iraq and a tire, maybe a cloud and a microphone, just random stuff and then see, you know, play around with it. It sounds silly at first, but then eventually, you might just hit on something that's kind of like really unique. And the other thing you want to do, you want to give yourself some freedoms. Okay? This is like your own personal freedom.
So freedom of mind. You want to always look for barriers that your your mind has created and is using for not necessary, some constraints that your mind just uses it for a comfortable way to solve problems, or to make sense of the world but they're totally not necessary. And when you break down those barriers, or walls, or assumptions, new paths open up that way. We're just a step away, but you just something inside your mind was preventing you from going there. So you always want to kind of peek into your brain and always be critical of like, Where, where are some assumptions that I that I can get rid of? Or where where can I make further distinctions that let you know allow new things to happen.
And you always, always want to challenge your stale and operate stale assumptions and operating in current operating conditions in the world and in your mind. You also want to get rid of critics in your life because you want to surround yourself with people who are positive, and you want to actually celebrate failure because if you're not failing, you're not being creative. You're not challenging yourself, because if you're not failing, you're doing everything to safely. That's you're doing exactly not being creative. That's you just using the same old stuff that works, but you're not pushing the boundaries, you're not growing. So failure is actually a symptom of you're trying new things and you Being creative at solving them.
And of course most of the time, you're not going to succeed most successful ideas project, they're not going to work. But that's but by only by going through the many that won't work. You'll get to the gems, that will be amazing. So don't be afraid of stepping into the unexplored in fact, be afraid of not stepping into the unexplored be afraid of not failing, and just get comfortable being uncomfortable. And that's when you actually want to be in your creative space.
