So once you've made all your image adjustments and you wish to share the images with friends or family or clients or whoever it may be, you've got a number of options, you could create a photo book from the book module, you could make a slideshow in the slideshow module, you could print to connected printers from the print module, or you can make a web gallery. But one of the easiest things to do is simply to export the file, you can export it out, that will create a copy of your edited file with all the adjustments applied to it, because remember, the adjustments are never applied to the original file. It's all non destructive here in Lightroom, nothing's permanently applied. So if you want to send off a edited version of the file, you export a copy. So I'd like to have a look at the options in the export dialog.

Now I can go to the File menu and choose Export just there. Or I can just go down to the big Export button there and choose Export also. So let's go ahead and click there on the Export dialog and it takes us into This rather large dialog box. So let's have a look at what the options are. So you'll notice in the top left hand corner, we've got presets, we've got various Lightroom presets, we can burn a full size JPEG. What this actually does is it creates it burns the image to a, your do CD or DVD burner if you've still got such a thing, I guess if you don't have a CD or DVD burner, it'll create a disk image, which is a file that can be burnt.

If you were to take it to one you can, you can export today and j which is going to preserve the full sort of raw file capabilities, or you've got these export for email options. So the first four email option actually sends the email for you as well. Whereas the second one for email hard drive will allow you to export the file onto your desktop or wherever you choose to export it and then you can manually email it yourself. So I'll just have to show you what the settings are for this initial for email preset. I'll, I'll go through reasonably quickly just to give you an overview of exporting, and I think I'll make a second video where I go a little bit deeper into some of the finer more fiddly settings that you may or may not be interested in. So we're going to choose the four email hard drive preset, and we're going to have a look at what options it gives us.

So the first one is export location. And the preset by default says choose folder later. So that means when we activate this preset, it'll then ask us where we want to save it to. Now I'm going to override that I'm going to say let's just go to the desktop. Let's go to the desktop just so that's sorted. I used to like that feature, choose photo light up, but I found I was always choosing desktop anyway.

So I'm going to go to the desktop. And I'm going to say putting sub folder just there. And let's call it email test, email test for some photo. Okay, now it says existing files. What should I do if there's already a file in there with the same name because it's possible you Might have exported the same file multiple times. So Lightroom wants to know if it encounters a file with the same name, what should it do?

So the default option is asked what to do. You could say choose a new name for the exported file or overwrite without warning or skip, I guess skip would be relevant. If it was you were exporting a bunch of images, then it would skip that one. I'm going to say choose new name for the exported file. Now, I've also got the ability to rename the files on export. I'll just go ahead and do that.

I'll say let's rename the file. Let's choose Custom name and original file number. And let's call it a email. Test typing and talking is a trap. So let's call it email test. And let's just why don't we put a little dash between those two words there.

Extension, lowercase or uppercase, generally just leave that lowercase video if there was video files included in this export, we'd have some options there but as there aren't we won't worry about it. File settings. We've got file format, so you can choose JPEG. psd that's the Photoshop document TIFF. dng or original. You know, JPEG is probably the best bet I'm in fact JPEGs.

Absolutely the best bet for email. That's what you want to choose. So we'll go ahead with JPEG. Now you've got quality, how heavily Do you want to Jai Piggott how much JPEG compression I'm going to say it's got the presets given me 50% which is a bit low, I might take it up to 70 just for a little bit less compression, slightly larger file but hopefully a little smoother and better looking. And color spice. This is something I'll talk about in more detail in my second video colorspace but for now sRGB is the really the best choice for screen or web or email or anything of that nature.

There are logic Hello spices that you may like to experiment with. But for now we're going to stick with sRGB and then we've got file, image sizes So we can resize the image, this particular preset is going to go 640 pixels at 72 pixels per inch. So 72 pixels per inch is your standard screen or web resolution. So we're happy with that. I might just say make the long edge 800 pixels. I think 640 is a bit small, I'm going to go 800 pixels.

I think that's a good size for emailing to someone 800 pixels on the long edge, and it will scale the short edge accordingly. And I can apply a little bit of sharpening as well. I'm going to say output for screen and I'm just going to say a low amount. So I talked about that output sharpening in more detail in my sharpening video as well. But for now, I mean, it's a good idea to test these sharpening settings, some people like shopping a little higher, some preferred a little bit lower. So there's no real right or wrong.

All of these will give you good results from low to high. But see what you prefer. I prefer low personally just there. I've got a choice about the metadata. Do I choose To include just the copyright information, do I include copyright and contact information? Do I include everything but the camera information?

Or do I include everything, I'll probably just go copyright and contact information there. I've got the ability to add a watermark. And that's something I'll talk about in more detail again in the second video. But for now, I can turn on the watermark as simple copyright watermark, is going to put a little bit of text in the lower left hand corner, that it pulls out of the metadata just with my name, and the copyright symbol. Or you can see I've got a couple of presets that I've created there. I've got a David Howard on photography or D HP preset, that I can choose if I want to add those watermarks.

And then finally, we've got these post processing options. So I can say after export, I can say show in Finder, that's what it does. By default, I could say I put in Photoshop, I put in another application, or I could just say do nothing. So I'm going to say do nothing for now because I want a lot more annoying me after it does the export. So now that I've got all that set up, I've actually won't include the water like I'm not a fan of the watermark so I won't include the watermark for now I'm going to turn that off, I've got all these options, it's going to go to the desktop email test ready to go. Now I'm going to say 800 pixels, low amount of sharpening, I'm going to create my own preset of that now.

So down here on the left, I click Add, and I'll call this email it hundred and it's added into my user presets, and there it is their email 800. And now when I go ahead and click Export, we'll see the currently selected image here gets exported out, and then we're done. So if I go down to my desktop, you can see I've got my folder it created there called email test. And there's my exported file there, nicely optimized for email purposes. So 133 kilobytes, tiny file easy as you like. And now that I've created that preset, of course, I can go and select a different image and I'll choose a landscape image Rather than portrait just to show you that there's no problem with the orientation sizing there.

And now I can go File Export with preset and there's my email 800 preset and out it goes again. And again if I just go to my desktop to check in my email test will see there is my second exported file, all ready to roll and just out of interest if I was to make some alterations to this file and email it again, you'll see if I go File, Export with presets or export again it you'll say just guys without a problem, because I chosen the preset to give it a new name. So you can see Lightroom saw that email test 05 double six was already there. So it just put a dash two on the end. So that could be another file that I've made some additional adjustments to. So there's the basics of exporting and creating an export preset.

I'll do a second video as I said after this going into a little bit More detail of some of the things we have looked at, we'll make a second preset for print purposes.
