In this section of the course, we're going to take a look at windows host file, and how we can use Windows host file to help secure your children while they're on the internet. Let's start off by finding the location of Windows host file. I'm going to open Google Chrome and I'm going to do a search for Windows host file. Let's go with Windows host file location. Select Enter. And there we have it.
So I'm going to highlight the location of Windows host file. Right click and hit copy. Let's go ahead and minimize this. Now I'm going to click Start. Do a search for notepad one, right click on notepad and select Run as administrator. I'm going to select File Open and in the file name location, I'm going to paste the location of Windows host file.
I'm going to select open. And there we have it. Now some brief details about Windows host file, as it states here it says This file contains the mapping of IP addresses to host names. Each entry should be kept in an individual line. The IP address should be placed in the first column, followed by the corresponding hostname. The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one space.
So we're going to do we're going to customize windows host file to block certain websites. We're going to go down to the very last line under the local host section. We're going to select enter and I'm Want to type zero dot zero dot zero dot zero. I'm going to tab twice. And this is where we're going to put the domain that we want to block. So in this example, we're going to go with YouTube.
Let's go ahead and open Google Chrome again. Let's make sure we can get to Google Chrome. I mean YouTube, like enter. Okay, we see that we can get to YouTube successfully. So what we're going to do, we're going to copy this URL, right click, hit copy, and we're going to minimize it again. Go back to Windows host host file, and paste that link.
But let's take out a bit of the extra stuff, the HTTPS and forward slash on the end. We just want the www.youtube.com We're going to select File, and select Save. And let's see what happens. Let's go ahead and open Google Chrome again. Right click and hit reload. Now, as you can see, YouTube still loads.
Well, that's because your system has already basically cached YouTube to the system. So we have to go in and delete YouTube from the browser history. We're going to hit these little three dots in the corner, select history, and Clear browsing data. We're going to select Clear data. Now let's go back and refresh the page again. And as you can see, YouTube can be reached.
We see that we still have a stable internet connection. So let's go ahead and try to refresh it again. As you can see, YouTube is now inaccessible. So let's go back to our host file and remove YouTube. From being blocked, we're going to backspace out of the line that we put Select File and Save. Now let's refresh for YouTube one last time.
We're going to right click and select reload. And there you have it. YouTube now shows successfully. I hope you guys enjoyed this course. I will see you again in the next one.
