Oh No, We are at Long O and Short O.
Phonics Cheat Sheet words:
Here's a cute video about some Pirates that know a lot of O words - can you hear the difference between the Long O and the Short O words?
Click here to watch - Long and Short O
Long O - Ocean - Oak - Ohio - Oh - Owen - Overalls - Overcoat - Over easy - Oink
(Some of these words are funny - Olivia didn't like "oozy" eggs since are runny, not hard or scrambled...:>)Do you see the "oa" and "oi" long vowel sounds? There are also a few words that are long with just the first O
Short O - Octopus - Otter - Otto - Oliver - Olives
(Owl is a little different - "ow" not "aw")
Are you getting more comfortable with distinguishing between "long" sounds and "short" sounds? Want more Short O practice? Here's another list of short O words from Dr Seuss - notice how they all are in one-syllable words (for beginning readers) and are the only vowel in that syllable.
Also, notice the silent letters in some words like "knob" and "knock".and the "ck" combo sound in many of these words = "k".
If you are an intermediate English speaker or above, this will be simple - but the pronunciation is what is important as always. What about "one"? What sound is that? Yep - it's "won" not "own". So, some words you will have to learn.
