I spy with my little eye....something bright and white and light.
I used to play with this Lite Brite light kit when I was younger...I loved it)
As you can see, Long I is spelled a few different ways -
IE - pie fries tries (plural of try) cries (present tense verb of cry)
I - white ice Lite Brite (the brand name of the toy above)
IGH - high might light bright
Y - fly my try cry
and of course - EYE (a homophone we learned in the A's
Here are these and other words with long I -
Do you see any words here that you don't know how to pronounce? You can always get pronunciation help from Google (type the word in + pronunciation) - and remember - there might be short and long vowels in the same word!
For example - Iron = /eye yern/ - (not eye ron) - is pronounced the same as tired = /tie yerd) -- two common mistakes that are easily learned IF you know the secret :)
Just remember - it's "eye" not "ee" (French and Spanish speakers may confuse these so practice saying these words correctly.
Short I is a little easier to spell (as usual) - just I in the middle.
pig - fig - dig - ditch - wish - dish
Y is also used as a short I - syllable - myth - mystery
With multi-syllable words, it's the same - history - kitten - bitten (past tense of bite)
So can you tell the difference between Long I and Short I now? Can you tell by their spelling which one to say?
Here is the worksheet for this lesson - print it out and practice.
