Practitioners licensed as clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, and mental health counselors completing this course and associated materials examination have met the requirement of 2 hours of continuing education related to Medical Errors. This requirement is to be completed every biennium following initial licensure.

• This course meets the mandatory 2-hour continuing education requirement "Prevention of Medical Errors" for mental health professionals governed under Florida Chapter 491.  
• Discuss the extent of the problem of medical errors in healthcare.
• Discuss the definition of medical errors.
• Identify patient safety organizations working on the issue of medical errors.
• Describe priority evidence-based patient safety interventions promoted by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
• Discuss the development of a Healthcare Partnership between professionals and patients.
• Identify principles from the National Patient Safety Foundation’s Universal Patient Compact.
• Discuss Root-Cause Analysis and its utilization
• Identify how clients and counselors can work together to reduce and prevent errors and increase patient safety

Discuss the impacts of:

• Improper diagnosis
• Failure to comply with mandatory abuse reporting laws
• Inadequate assessment for violence (e.g., Suicide, homicide)
• Failure to detect medical conditions presenting as psychological/psychiatric disorders
