So with this combination of instruments the flute is obviously a lot quieter than saxophone so it creates a real challenge and opportunity for the saxophone player to play quietly to match it. And also as flute player, it's a great opportunity to really play with a full full sound all the way through and most of the air on a flute travels right past the top of the horn. So it's a real it's a good strength practice to play duets with other other instruments there Larry, what were some of the things you were thinking about as well as as I was playing the shoe easy with the flute you know, they I don't play much flute but my my saxophone flute playing friends, like you have told me that it'll make me a better saxophone player because you do lose so much of the air. Going off the instrument, you have to become very efficient about how much air you putting in so as a saxophone player playing with a quieter instrument, one of the one of the beginner, one of the not beginner, but one of the first tricks that I used to play quieter is just take a smaller bite on the mouthpiece.
So in here, my teeth being sort of halfway up and right where the reed splits away from the mouthpieces about where I would angle my tips. I'm going back to about a half inch off and that is an easy way to quickly play quietly. I put my teeth back into the place. Already the sound is I'm allowing read has more room to vibrate. So of course, the sound will be louder and it'd be harder to control as well. Ideally, you want to be able to practice in the same set position and be able to play at all dynamic ranges.
And especially for a lot of us living in, in cities or anywhere you live, you know, saxophone can be a loud instrument to practice and you don't want to bother the neighbors. So one of the things is one of my teachers and always said, you know, you should be able to play everything that you can play now at a normal volume, you should be able to play in a quieter volume. Of course, sometimes our reads give us trouble or depending on the humidity. It's just sometimes you know, you have those days where the saturation doesn't seem to speak and you don't have the control over the over the over the volume at all. Everything just seems to come out loud. So that's That little, take a smaller bite trick and can can really play can be a great thing.
