Hey everyone, welcome to this lecture. What is jidoka? Simply put jidoka means automation with a human element. This is the Toyota definition, and is highly focused on an automated process where a transaction flows from beginning to end, or in a manufacturing setting a production line of a product jidoka is one of the two pillars of Toyota production system. The origin story of jidoka traces back to sakichi Toyoda, and his long string of inventions that revolutionized the automatic loom, just as you had learned in the past lectures. Among his inventions, was a device that detected when a thread broke, and when it did, it would immediately stop the loom.
You could then reset the loom and most importantly, solve the problem. To avoid repeating the defect. With jidoka, you need a method to detect defects when they occur and automatically stop production. So an employee can fix the problem before the defect continues downstream. When you implement jidoka, you're equipped equipment or the system you use is endowed with intelligence to stop itself when it has a problem. Preventing quality problems from being passed down the line is much more effective and less costly, then inspecting and repairing quality problems after the fact.
Now, let's look at an example of jidoka in the service industry.
