Hey everyone. Welcome to this lecture, an example of Poka Yoke. In this example, I will share how a major loophole in a product was rectified using Poka Yoke a way back in mid 1990s. When the camera industry was at its peak, one of the world's best camera manufacturing organization, launched its DSLR camera. It was one of the finest camera available at that time. And this organization had invested heavily to ensure this was indeed the best of its kind.
As this camera was launched, camera lovers and photographers flocked to buy this version. This launch was a super success. And this organization was cashing in some big money. Consumers loved the photographs and the camera sales were at its peak. How Ever. In just about a few days of launching this camera, consumer started complaining.
Some of the photographs clicked by this camera or blank. There is no picture. It's just a black photograph. How on earth is this possible? This is one of the finest cameras launched by this big company. It has almost all the features that a camera lover would love to have.
How can it field blank pictures. As soon as more and more customers started sharing this complaint, the management of the camera company decided to investigate. They invested a big budget in getting this issue fixed. Team members of the r&d department started looking for the required bugs. testing of the camera took place from all imaginable perspectives. However, they were unable to identify the root cause While all of this was happening, one of the r&d engineers was called upon by his friend for his son's birthday party.
So this engineer reached at the event, the bird The house was lake and filled with innumerable guests. His friend, and the party host was excited for his son's birthday. And that excitement had turned into dance, sound of children playing at the house and much more. Now it was time to cut the cake. The little birthday boy was just about to cut as the party guests gathered to sing birthday song for the little one. At this moment, the r&d engineers saw that his friend had the same camera and was about to click his son's cake cutting photographs.
And right at the moment when the cake was cut, and the photographs were clicked the audience Engineers found the root cause of the problem. The root cause was, in all the excitement of cutting the cake, singing the birthday song and managing the event. His friend who was also operating the camera had forgotten to remove the shutter of the camera lens as it deserved any and every photograph clicked by his friend during that event turned out to be blank. So what comes next is the cameras manufactured by this organization had a mistake proofing step, the camera won't click until the shutter is removed. Think about that. I hope you have loved the story.
With that we come to the end of this lecture. Thank you for attending. See you in the next one.
