Greetings, I'm Professor Kay. And in this short video presentation, we're going to see how we can prevent our domain controllers from logging us off after so many minutes of inactivity. To make this as painless as possible, we're going to use a group policy setting that we can roll out underneath the Group Policy for domain controllers, and let every domain controller pick this up when they first log on to the network. Let's begin by opening up Server Manager. Once they have Server Manager opened up, let's just go to Tools and a scroll on down to Group Policy Management. Once you're inside of Group Policy Management, go to the top of your domain, scroll on down to you come to the container for domain controllers.
Open that up, and you'll see that there is a group policy template for domain controllers. you right click on it and let's go to Edit. The setting that we need to configure is going to be under Computer Configuration. So let's go up to Computer Configuration. Expand your policies. Click on Windows settings.
Let's go ahead and expand that window a little bit. Now click on your security settings. Go ahead and expand your security settings. Go ahead and click on local policies. Go ahead and expand that. Next we're going to click on security options.
Let's go ahead and make this full screen now. And in the right window pane, you're going to scroll on down until you come to interactive. So once you find the setting for interactive log on, you're going to scroll down to find machine inactivity limit. Go ahead and double click that, that's going to open up the properties for this particular setting inside of this group policy, what we want to do is go ahead and define this policy. So make sure you check that box, you find this policy setting that's going to enable it. Next you're going to set them machine will be locked out after zero seconds.
If you'd like an explanation about what this does, you can go ahead and click on the explain tab and you'll see That windows notices inactivity of a logged on session. Going back over to the security policy settings, make sure everything's the way you want it, then you can just say OK, or Apply and OK. And now, you will not be logged off. After so many minutes of inactivity. Let's go ahead and close out the Group Policy Management Console. And let's bring up a command prompt real quick. So we're going to go to the search bar, and we're going to type in cmd.
Bring up the command prompt. You can type in GP update space, forward slash, force, hit Enter. And now this is going to refresh the Group Policy for this domain controller. Another thing you can do is just log off and log back on or you can restart the machine and it'll pick up the new settings. And that's how you can prevent being logged off after a few minutes of inactivity.
