Greetings, I'm Professor Kay. And in this short video presentation, we're going to see how we go about making a shared folder using Server Manager. Regardless, if you're using server 2012, server 2016, or server 2019 Server Manager remains the same across all three. In our last video, you saw how we went up using the file explorer, and going into our local disk C and just creating a simple admin share. Well, we can create a share also using the user interface of our Server Manager. And let's see how we do this.

So I've got Server Manager opened up and we're underneath file and storage services. If I click on this, and I go down here to where it says shares in the left menu, I can go to task and I can create a new share. On this next page, you'll see that we can create some different types of shares. Now usually, you're going to just go ahead and select the SMB share, quick option, and you can read the description over here to find out more about But this is the normal share that you're going to go after. Let's go ahead and click Next. On this next screen, we can select an existing volume, or we can choose to type in a custom path, we're going to go ahead and choose the option to type in a custom path.

And then we're going to click the Browse button. On this next page, you can expand your C drive. And then you can go up and you can click on the New Folder button, we have to give our new share user friendly name. So I'm just going to call this data just click anywhere inside the white box and then go down and click on the Select Folder button. We now have our custom path for this new data folder that we just created. And if we click Next, you'll see that this is actually the network path to that folder.

This is the local path. But if somebody wants to access this folder remotely, this is the path they have to use. Going and click Next. Here again, we have some more of that granularity that we get when we create a channel folder using the Server Manager, we have some more options here that we can play with such as enable access based enumeration. This is going to restrict users to seeing only the folders or the shares that they have permissions for. So you can go ahead and select that one.

This next option will allow you to encrypt the data while it's being accessed. The allow caching share just makes it easier for the individuals to work with the contents of that shared folder offline. Go ahead and click Next. You can think of this next window as being the Security tab that we saw with our previous creation of a standard share using the file explorer. So this is the same type of access control that we're going to apply using this user interface as opposed to just using the Security tab that we saw previously. So now I can click on customized permissions.

And here you see that same permissions or Security tab settings that we saw previously. And here is the share. Now here, we see that everyone will have access to this folder, but we don't want to allow that. So we're going to remove everyone, as soon as we add another default user group. So let's go ahead and click on the Add button. And here we're going to just type in domain users.

So I want domain users, we'll say, OK, and I'll say OK to that. So now that I've added the domain users, let's go ahead and give them full control. We'll say OK to that. And now we're going to remove the everyone group. This means that you must be a member of the domain users to have access to this new share that we are creating. And now we're going to go back to our permissions.

And we're going to click Add, we're going to add that same security principle. And we're going to type in domain, and we'll select check names. And again, we'll select domain users. We'll say OK to that. So now we're going to give these individuals modify permission. Now we gave the share permission full control on the permissions, we're going to give them modify.

Now the way this works is, the most restrictive permission will apply when the user tries to access the shared folder over the network. So if I have two different sets of permissions, the most restrictive will apply. And what that means is, as long as they're coming over the network to get access to the share, they won't have full control, they'll only be able to modify, read and execute list folder contents, read and write, but they will not have full control. Now, if they come onto that machine locally, that's different. Those are local permissions. And that's what they'll have full control.

Go in and say, Okay, and now you look at the screen here. And we see that the domain users have access to have modify. So another example would be as if I went into the share permission and I select on the full control option here. Go to Edit and I took away full control and I just Give them read. Now when the user access this folder, the only permission they will have will be read, because that is the most restrictive. Let's go ahead and click OK. And we'll click Next.

And let's click on Create. So as you learned in this short video presentation, the ability to create a share up inside of Server Manager provides a lot more granularity and greater access to the permissions that you want to have control over for that particular share. And it's a good option if you need to be creating a more stringent set of permissions for the share access.
