Greetings, I'm Professor Kay and in this short video presentation, we're going to see how we can use the ntds util to reset the directory services recovery mode password. The Active Directory directory services recovery mode password is used when an object the entire domain or force needs to be restored from backups. The recovery mode password is initially set when the machine is promoted to a domain controller. That's why it's important that the password is well documented and stored in a secure location. But in the event, a new administrator comes on board or the password is forgotten. The password can be recovered using the NT DSU till the NT DSU till is used to perform database maintenance of active directory.
It's used to manage and control single master operations and remove metadata left behind by domain controllers that have been removed from the network without properly being uninstalled. All this procedure you're about to be shown applies to server 2008 2012 2016 and server 2019. To begin, let's bring up the search bar and let's type in cmd. Right click on the command prompt and you're going to select Run as administrator. The next day we have to do is get inside of the shell for the NPV issue till and we do this just by typing in anti de su till at the command prompt and hit enter. That brings up the NT DS utils shell.
Notice that the prompt changes to let us know that we are now inside of the shell or the MTD issue till at the prompt. You're just going to type in set vs RM password hit enter. Notice that the prompt changes. Now at this new prompt we have to type in reset password on server followed by the name of the domain controller that I want to reset this password on this case, it's going to be DC one, hit enter. You're now prompted for your new password. Go ahead and type it in, hit enter.
Now confirm the new password. Hit enter one more time, and it tells you that the password has been set successfully. To exit this shell, just type in the word quit, hit Enter. And now to exit the anti de su tool I'm just typing quit one more time, hit Enter, and you're back to the prompt. Now you can have different passwords for your different domain controllers for resetting the recovery mode, but it's not a good idea. So you want to have consistency.
So make sure that you do this across all your domain controllers so that you don't have a problem when it comes time to recover your Active Directory database. And that's going to conclude this short video presentation on how we go about resetting the directory services recovery mode. password. Now if you have any questions or concerns about any of the material that was covered in this short video presentation, please do not hesitate to reach out and contact your instructor and I'll see you in my next video.
