Hello, this is Rob. Now while you are performing Webroot, and home directory hygiene, seeing if all the files that are there should be there. Another thing you can do is check the permissions on the files and the folders. Now that permissions are, who is allowed to do what with what's on the server, so the files should be executable by other people, but they can only be changed by you, the admin, the person has control over their account. This is a phenomenal important. Just imagine if there's a file out there that anyone isn't able to change, then you've just got an open invitation to hackers and attackers.
So when I say avoid having any file or directory set to 777777 means that anyone can write a file. So I'll show you how to Check this on your server both using an FTP client and the cPanel for a browser. So on the FTP client, the way you can check the permissions for files and folders is to right click and file permissions. And that folder has the file permissions of 755, which is what we want. Let's try a file. So right click file permissions.
And that is 644, which is what we want. I'll just show you file permissions. If we wanted the public to be able to write something, then as you can see, the numeric value is 777. We don't want 777 because that is of course a security concern. And here we are in the home directory of the file manager using cPanel. And it's actually very much easier to see the permissions, you can see them down the right here, you can see there's no seven, seven sevens.
And if we go into the public HTML or the web root, again, you can see all the folders are 755. And all the files are 644. If you wanted to change them, if one of them was 777, God forbid, you again, right click and change permissions. And you've got that same familiar layout in order to change who reads writes and executes a file or folder. So all an important part of your security, getting to learn your file structure on your server, and knowing what does what, what should be there, what shouldn't be there, and who has the permissions to edit certain files. My name is Rob cabin.
I'll see you in another video.
