Hello, this is Rob, I highly recommend that you enable two step or two factor authentication to the login of your WordPress website, I can see two factor authentication coming more and more popular as the years go by, because username and passwords are quite simply not up to the task, or they are causing so many problems, problems that two step authentication will solve that I think it's a no brainer coming forward. You'll already be introduced to this by online banking, or when you have to connect to some government website. They sometimes like to send you a pin for your phone. Even better, I find is using the free app for smartphones called Google Authenticator. So if you have an iPhone or an Android, you can download Google Authenticator for free. And the advantage of this is you can change your phone number.
But this is an app that always lives on your telephone. And you set it up once for the website, and then you have two factor authentication to be able to log into that website. I already use this on three different places. So in order to set up your Google Authenticator, go to plugins, add new, and search for Google Authenticator. You see, there's three plugins here that offer two factor authentication with the Google authenticator app. Actually, there's four, there's another one here and there's five.
There's another one here, and there's other forms of two factor authentication as well. I would leave you to choose the plugin you want. Remember to choose something with good reviews and something that's been updated recently. Now, this is a very good one here, but I couldn't get it to work actually. So I actually chose this one, which is just called Google Authenticator. It's a shame.
It hasn't been updated for a year. But it's working at the moment, and it has a lot of installs and a good star rating. So we'll activate that. Now, when you've activated the Google Authenticator plug in, you should go to users your profile. So here on your profile, you scroll down, you'll see Google Authenticator Settings, then I would check active and give it a description WordPress blog. And then in your secret here, this gives you two ways that you can connect it to your Google authenticator app.
So you go on your phone to your Google authenticator app, and then You enter your secret. Now, that's going to be difficult, very time consuming. So the best thing to do is show this QR code here. And then go to your Google authenticator app. And you'll see a big red plus at the bottom, which means create a new account. And then when you do that, it will give you the option to enter the key, which is this thing here, which, as I say, is going to take you a long time, or scan the barcode.
So scan the barcode is what I do. So with that done, you should then update your profile, and then log out. So now when you log in, you have to enter your username and password and your Google Authenticator code. So you go to your app, and then have a look at the WordPress blog, you gave it a special name and it will give you a number and the number is going to run out in 20 seconds. So I'm going to type it quickly here. Still got 10 seconds left and login And we're into the back end safe and secure with two factor authorization.
So whether you want to use Google Authenticator or the plugin I used or not, I would urge you to use some sort of two factor or two step authentication to log in to your WordPress back end. My name is Rob coven. I'll see you in another video.
