Module Two, getting started identifying your area for which you have skills and knowledge in. So you want to be a consultant, you like the sound of being your own boss, calling your own shots and taking your life back into your own hands. And of course, taking charge of your time as well. That's brilliant. making the decision is easy part. But you also have to take action.
I mean, how many times have we all sat and said we would do something you know, only for it not to happen. It could be a personal goal, a new year's resolution or going to the gym. You know, studying, it could be anything, but there's things that we say we're going to do, but if we don't put in the action, then it won't happen. So if you are serious about taking this step into consulting, you need to firstly ask yourself this question. Where do my skills lie? We all have skills and talents.
So it's about tapping into those. No, I asked myself the very same question because being a consultant means being an expert in your field. You should obviously answer this question really honestly. For me, it was pretty simple. Because I studied business communications at degree level and went on to do a postgraduate diploma in PR. I knew you know that I would, I would offer consultancy in communications around PR communications marketing.
I've always worked across various industries, but always a bit in the communications departments that covers PR and Public Affairs. And it also a couple of stakeholder relations, marketing and events. Now having worked for over a decade in this area, you know, in a variety of roles, and I knew that I had the right skills and competencies to go out and consult. I was confident in my skills and always knew that I wanted to work for myself helping other businesses. Now for you may be easy for you to identify your skills and knowledge because maybe you studied studied in your chosen area, or maybe you're currently working in your chosen profession with your in hairdressing or accounting office. ignition or whatever it is, wherever your skills are, those are the ones that you want to look at.
It's important to look at your skills and knowledge set and apply it to this, okay? But don't be discouraged, should you want to make a career change, you have a dream of working, you know, as a completely different career than we were doing. You know, maybe gonna be a wellness or beauty consultant, for example. You just need to ensure that you have acquired the necessary skills to equip yourself with the knowledge in order to provide a service to your clients. While identifying your skills is a key part of this step. It is also very important to have passion for your area and competence within that when I made a decision, I was naturally excited and nervous.
You know, I did have friends and families you know saying to me, oh, you're my short wants to leave my secure nine to five job you know, am I crazy that those who had made me and were saying oh, you know, this is great. This is a great risk that you're you know, I think this is really brilliant. Throughout it all. And throughout your journey you have to remember not to let me put sway you decide what you want to do and stick with it. Sure it is a risk when you want to go out and consult and work for yourself, you know, there is a risk to that, which is what we're talking about now. But you know, there's a risk that you do in life, okay?
It's about making sure that you're happy with that. And for me, the idea of having a secure job to me what exactly a security these days I think Long gone are the days that you have a job for life, you know, they've got zero contract hours or real now, you know, there's different styles of working. So I do think that is about doing what suits you, and what suits your skill set. Okay. I like the risk, you know, I like risk and I like the idea of choosing my own hours and when I can work, and the limitless potential clients out there in need of my services. And crucially, you know, when you know, for me making a decision from my life and getting paid to do what I love was what drove me into, you know, going down the consultant route, and I'm hoping they will do the same for you.
So, will you stick with your question? career choice. I'll have a fresh start in something else.
