Hi. So in this lecture, we're going to talk about the last two of unities sub principles, and that is, interconnection and unity of three. So interconnection is probably the easiest to visualize, as in planting designs. And this also holds true throughout the conceptual stages of the design. It works as far as working with our hardscapes and how you lay your garden to blend out these spaces. So without interconnection, you might be looking at patches of planting.

But with interconnection you actually blend them together, you weave them together. So we're going to have a look at some examples again of interconnection and unity of three to give us some ideas on how to unify the garden without it being overly formal. So we have this patio and some steps up. Also an elevation involved and the rain retaining wall on each side. Now we have some interconnection rather than just three different elements. Once you grasp the concept of this, you're going to start seeing how these principles intertwine together to make it a successful composition.

Now the same thing would be true with planting, we have conceptual planting on one side, the same idea of planting on the other side. So now we've connected the two sides more effectively. If there were some trees here, it would give it a very formal look to the design. But because of the other tree here, there is a symmetrical appearance today's what happens when you start working without numbers. You can't visually split this in half. symmetrical design is going to be a mirror image to itself.

By using odd numbers or unity or three, five or seven, you are now breaking that and you don't really see them as individuals as much as groupings. It's more casual, it's still imbalanced visually, and on psychological level, even though it's not mathematically imbalanced. So it works really well to do this as symmetrical planting. And once you get over seven to nine plants of the same species, we now see it as a mass planting, and you don't even try to mentally break it down on a mathematical scale. with seven or less plants, you're going to see there's more on one side than the other. So even though there is definitely a place for symmetrical planting, like framing and the view or entry, an alley of trees, yes, it works.

But for casual garden, which is what most people are looking for having the Unity a symmetrical design, the odd numbers is going to be very effective. So interconnection takes shapes together, plants into each other and zigzag your hardscaping to give it more interest. You can do this with your planting plants use the symmetrical concept to give give it more of an informal feel, but also still keep the balance that we're looking for in our form compensations.
