Hello, and welcome to this video. So far in this module we've laid substitutes to rest and why they just don't work. So now it's time to look at why willpower has one of the lowest success rates of all the quitting method, and why that also does not work. So what is the willpower method? To put it simply, it's declaring, that's it. I'm going to quit.
I've seen the lights, I've had enough, I am done. And you immediately stop smoking, throw away all your cigarettes and declare you're going cold turkey until you no longer crave it. Isn't that fantastic? Well, you're awesome. You've decided to stop. And that genuinely is brilliant.
And I'm really happy for you. However, what are you going to do when you get a craving? And the answer I get to this is well, I'll just not think about it. And I won't get a craving and that sounds lovely. Oh, problem is when someone tells you don't think about a red balloon. No, really don't think about a red balloon.
Clear your mind right out and don't think about a red balloon. What are you thinking about? Of course, a red blue. So you spend most of your day saying, I'm not thinking about smoking. But what are you actually doing? That's right.
You're thinking about smoking. And what does thinking about smoking make you do? Well, if you're using the willpower method, and you can't do anything other than not smoke and not think about it, even though you are, so you panic, you feel something is missing. You're basically hitting your head against the wall. You get an aggravated short and snippy with people around you. And then because you're doing that, you see Hoping one of them will just say to you look, just have a cigarette because I can't cope with you when you're like this.
And that will be all you need to hear to start again. Someone else giving you permission to smoke. You can then throw your hands up in the air and say, Well, I tried, because the people in my life said that they would rather have me smoke and see me go through this. So I'm going to have one, but you know what? Just smoke less. Now, I personally experienced this when I tried using the willpower method.
I got cranky and irritable I thought everyone i'd stopped and was using willpower alone. I got a lot of you brave and well done you which is always well received because because who doesn't like a compliment? Even if we pretend that we don't. I got worse and worse and I use phrases like I would normally be okay if I could just have a smoke but I can't because I've stopped And have you? I mean, have you ever seen a nonsmoker? do this?
Nope. They deal with situations as they come up, and they don't go round in that they couldn't really smoke, they would feel better, mainly because it's not true. And I got to the point where someone said, maybe you should just have one this time. And that was all I needed. And I started again, I didn't even really like the first one I had when I started again, but all my mental triggers were still in place. And even though the physical withdrawal was not really noticeable.
The physical reaction that I had when I started again was very noticeable, particularly the feeling of being lightheaded. But I had a fear of failure. I had mental triggers that I didn't know how to deal with. And I've been given permission to smoke because I was annoying other people. And I really quickly retaught myself and went on with my life. As an unhappy smoker.
So as you can see, the willpower method is probably the most difficult way to stop and has a very low success rate. So it's certainly not one that I would recommend. It's also the reason why I told you to keep smoking throughout this course, because I didn't want you to fall into the trap of having to use your willpower. And as I've said before, I do like to keep things simple. And willpower, to using willpower to stop is anything but simple. So to sum up, we've covered what the willpower method is, and why it doesn't work.
It's as simple as that. That's what we've covered. It's not helpful. It's got a low success rate. So I certainly don't recommend it. Now, in case you haven't already realized, I do like to keep things simple.
So with that in mind, we'll move on to the next topic, and I'll see you there bye for now.
