Start channel one which is the kick drum. I know this is Shure Beta 52 microphone on this so it's a dynamic microphone with a large diaphragm designed specially for bass drums and a warm sound very full so it should give us quite good sound will push up the channel have a quick listen and on this I've also got the first of my drama for Channel noise gates in searching on the bass drum. So first of all, make sure that the inserts out have a quick Listen, I've routed the channel to the mix so we can hear out the PA push the fader up, we've set the gain as well we put the range control in so that we padded the channel down because it's quite a hot signal. So we've got the range control to pat the channel down we set the gain up accordingly. Got a nice level coming in.
It's it's not peaking it's going to about on the pigs is still hitting about plus three plus six dB. But this desk can more than handle that kind of level. Push the fader up Have a listen. First thing we're going to do is going to listen to the channel check it works. And we're going to have a look to see whereabouts the filters are set on the key chain, listen on the noise gate. Switch the insert in and bypass now switch the key listen.
Now key listen is now being altered by these filters. In this setting, the filter is doing nothing the low high pass filter set to 25 hertz, the low pass filter set to 35 K. So obviously, it's not doing anything directly to the signal. So we're going to bring up the high pass filter to filter out some of the low end and they're gonna bring down the low, the low pass filter. So we're just listening to the sound of the beater actually hitting the head. This is what's going to be triggering the gate to open and close by just listening to the sound of the beater. We know we can ignore any kind of rumbling noises the bass Drum and hopefully cut out any missed triggering, we're going to set the threshold so it's the right kind of level and the release.
Okay, quite happy that I'm just listening to the bit that I need. So I'm going to switch it back in to gate, I've got the choice between switching either from minus 20 or minus 90 Db on the range control. I don't really want to open and close, it's quite drastically. So I'm just going to crop it to leave on minus 20. That's obviously really short release. I'm just gonna reset.
Kind of reach to be happy with that. Good, take that out for a second and just sort of taking the guys out of the line. I'm just going to start doing a bit of EQ on it. I'm going to turn the page up a bit louder. Just do it without talking to them. First thing I'm going to do is take out some of the low mids that's bothering me.
So I'm taking out a bit of salt 200 I'm going to put a bit of a switch the top end to shelving, just gonna boost a bit the top end to get a bit more bite to the sound. And I'm also going to switch the low end to show that shelving so I just a bit a little bit more low end to it. So I'm sweeping the frequency to find out where it is I want to cut on the low mood and it's kind of about there. I got to put some back in because I found the frequency that I want. And I'm going to put it back in Have a quick listen. Gonna put a bit of sort of bite in at two K, kind of reasonably happy with that.
Switch the gate back in. And the reason I switched the gate out is because it's easier to hear the overall sound I don't get scratched structured by the gate. So I'm kind of happy with the kick drum. And now we're gonna have to move on to the snare drum.
