This is Barry mold still getting small businesses on stuck. One of the biggest places that small business owners have a hard time with is how they build a culture inside their company that actually works and can last for a long time. We all want to know what's that magic elixir at some of those famous companies like Google have, that we can create inside our own company. Remember, culture is not something you just always create. Every company whether you like it or not, actually has one. And there isn't a small business owner out there that hasn't made a lot of mistakes along the way in trying to create the culture in their company that they really Want.
Now let's talk about how you're stuck around this area. If you don't have a good culture, you have a high turnover. Most small businesses have employee turnover over 30% a year. What does that mean? That every three years you're starting with a whole different crew, you also get stuck around the idea that, let's admit it, you really don't like your employees. And there are many days where you actually go into the office, and you don't like much work in there.
Imagine what your employees think. You really can't say what your culture is. But all you know is that it's not a lot of fun. Now, sometimes we'll say, Well, I don't need a culture because like Steve Jobs, I know what's best for my folks. Remember, that was Steve Jobs, and your know Steve Jobs. Another way where you really get stuck is you have a tendency to keep secrets and everybody knows it.
You're always keeping the door closed. You're office, and you very, very rarely have face to face communication, you think is just just too messy. you'd much rather text people or email them or talk to them on the phone. The way you get unstuck in this area is you got to stay ahead of the curve by actually creating the culture. As we talked about in the last video, it all comes down to who you actually hire. Don't worry about hiring based on skills, certainly they have to have a base level.
But make sure you hire based on culture, do they actually fit into the values that you have for your company? Why is culture so important? First of all, studies have shown for a long time that a positive culture produces a stronger team, bigger innovations, more productivity, and in the end, your small business will be a heck of a lot more profitable. So let's talk about actually how you do that. And of course, there's no magic solution, but here Some steps you should follow. First of all, think about what are the values that you really want your company stand for?
Remember, you started this company for a reason? What do you want to get out of it? And what has Michael Port would say? What do you actually stand for? What do you value? Is it the money?
Do you value the people? Do you value the profit? Do you want to make a difference for your customers? Set that out and let everyone know in your company? Here's the three things that you actually stand for. Number two is you've got to invest in your employees.
I find time and time again. Many small business owners don't know that golden equation that we talked about in the last video, they don't know what their employees goals are and how they match with the company's goals. They don't take time to train them up front. They don't have ongoing training, and they don't look to see where they actually can advance to. You've also number three Gotta be selective with your customers. As we talked about in the first video of this section, you just can't take all comers, anybody that really wants to pay you.
You've only got to keep the ones long term that are going to fit into your values, the ones that are profitable, the ones that teach that treat you and your people well, and we already discussed how if that doesn't happen, how you got to let them go. Number four, is you've got to form effective communications with not only your people, but your vendors and your customers inside your company. You've got to think about how am I expressing myself? Am I doing enough face to face? Am I using video, email, phone, social media, we are social human beings. A lot of the culture has to be done face to face.
Now go out there and compare yourself to other cultures that you really like. Do you like the way that Google does it or Apple Zappos. It's great to refer to those cultures. But remember, you can't be Google. You can't be apple. You can't be Zappos, take what you like from those cultures.
And if they fit your values, try to instill them in your company. What do you like about them and choose some of those things. And finally, number six, you've got to find the successor as we talked about before, you only have built the business when it's not all about you, who is actually going to be the person that succeeds you what happens if you get run over by a bus? What happens next? More importantly, how is the company gonna run when you go on vacation? As always, strive for minimal achievement, and pick the one change the one thing you want to make to get unstuck.
This is Barry mold, still getting small business on stuff. Have a great day.
