The popular-styles pianist is often called on to play both melody and chord tones in the right hand, and working up the ability to play like this is a step-change in the popular-styles pianist's skill and playing.

Practicing the Hanon exercises (right hand only) with the thumb ('chord tone') held over the duration of the pattern is a good way to train the weaker fingers ('melody notes') to play independently.
