Rhythm Fundamentals - How to listen and count rhythms In this course, we are going to learn the absolute basics of how to count rhythms, listen to patterns, and be able to clap and count these rhythmic patterns back. We will first focus on simple short patterns and then slowly add in different note lengths, and syncopated rhythms as well, Each class will have the same format:
What makes this class somewhat unique is that we will start at the absolute beginning, and once you understand the concepts of basic counting skills, we then explore how these different rhythms work together with quizzes and tutorials.
This is the perfect course for someone who wants to learn how rhythms work but feels overwhelmed by the fast pace of many "learn to play drum" courses. As you progress through these videos there will be certain project goals to meet:
The first goal will be to get used to counting while listening to rhythms being clapped. Initially, you need only to clap along and listen to the patterns. We will then learn how the patterns are written down in music notation and the syllables associated with each note.
Please share your thoughts and experiences with the other students as you try the quizzes.
Each class has the same structure. I first introduce the goal of the class, then through the tutorial section, gives different strategies for achieving this goal. We then do an ear training quiz to confirm if we have learned the class goal.
I have attached the answers to each quiz as a downloadable document.
You should have ears and hands.
