In this module I'll go over the mechanics of working with footnotes and endnotes including inserting, customizing, navigating through them and deleting them as well as creating a footnote continuation notice. I've included the instructions for creating footnotes and endnotes with the resources for this module. Please keep in mind that depending upon the type of document you are creating, there may be specific rules as to how you must use footnotes and endnotes within your document. You can add footnotes and endnotes to explain or comment on or reference details noted in your document. Footnotes normally appear at the bottom of each page, while endnotes normally appear at the end of your document or section. Footnotes and endnotes also consists of two linked parts, the note reference mark and the corresponding note text.

We'll start this module by going over footnotes and let's begin with how to add a footnote. Note, I'm going to go ahead and open up my footnote documents so we can work with the footnote. Let's start with how you add a footnote. So let me go to my footnote document. The references tab contains the commands for footnotes. So let's click on the references tab, and you'll see the group footnotes.

This is where you come to add your footnotes, navigate between your footnotes and also customize your footnotes. So let's begin by adding a footnote. We'll go to an area where we need to add a footnote. Click where you want the footnote reference mark to be added. Then click on Insert footnote. As soon as you do that, it's going to go to the bottom of your document.

It's going to add the footnote number and now you can begin typing in your footnote. To return to the footnote reference Mark within your document. Double click on the footnote and it'll take you back to the reference mark. Now you notice when I hover over it, my cursor changes to a little note and it'll always list the footnote information. When you create footnotes, it'll add a super subscript number exactly where you had your cursor. Let's go ahead and add a couple more footnotes.

I'm going to click where I want it, go up and click Insert footnote. And you'll notice it automatically numbers it takes me down so I can insert my footnote, double click on the footnote number to return back to your document and to the reference point. Let's go ahead and add a couple more footnotes to this document. We'll add our third note here. Let's go back up to our document. Now at this point, let's go back up above where we've added some footnotes and add another footnote.

So come up here, click Insert footnote. And you'll notice as soon as I do that, it remembers the footnotes and moves me to the point where I need to be For that footnote. So if you look at the footnotes it remembered them. You'll also notice that as I added more footnotes, it moved the paragraph that was here down to the next page. That's because it needed more room for the footnotes. Let's go to our next page and just add a couple.

Now you'll notice on this page it continuing the numbering from the previous page. So I've got footnote six and footnote seven. If I needed to navigate through my footnotes, I would come up to the footnotes group. click on the More button next to next footnote. And I could tell it to go to the previous footnote. And continue on as I'm looking through my footnotes.

To customize my footnotes. I'm going to go back to the footnotes group and click on the drop down. From here it'll open up the footnote And no dialog box. The location tells me my footnotes are at the bottom of the page. I could change that to below text if I wanted to. I'm going to change the number format.

I could choose a custom mark. And I could also tell it where to start. And I can tell it if I want the numbering to restart on each section or each page. And I'm going to tell it to apply to the whole document. So let's go ahead and click Apply. Let's click show notes.

It changed the numbering to Roman numeral, and it did it for the whole document. Since I said apply to whole document. It's double click to go back up to our document. To delete a footnote. You need to go to the footnote marker and delete it from there. So let's go ahead and delete this footnote.

So we're going to backspace over it. It's now highlighted. So we'll delete if we scroll down to our footnotes, you'll notice it's gone and it's remembered. If you have a footnote that is too long to fit on a page, you can create a continuation notice to let readers know that it is continued on the next page. The first thing we need to do is make sure we're in draft view. So I'm going to switch my view by going to the View tab and choosing draft.

We'll go back and click the references tab. Click Show Notes. You'll notice when you click show notes in the draft view, it comes up a little bit different. It shows you footnotes or footnotes, and here's where you're going to go to choose your continuation notice. Click continuation notice. Once you do that, it takes you to the point where you type your continuation notice.

Once you're done, we'll click Show Notes until we go back to our document. We'll switch our view and we're back to our document. You can also change the separator Between your footnotes in your document, so let's go back to draft view. Go to the references tab, click show notes. Click the down arrow for the footnotes pane and choose footnote separator double click to highlight it and then change it to whatever you want. So now let's go back to our document.

Switch back to our Print Layout view. And you'll notice it's changed. So that's an overview on how to work with footnotes. Let's go ahead and do some endnotes and you'll see that it works exactly the same way. Let's go to our EndNote document. We'll go to the references tab, click where we want to add our EndNote.

Click Insert in note, and it'll take us down to insert our EndNote just like when we click the Insert footnote, it takes us right down to where we need to add it. Double click the number It'll take us back up to our document. Let's insert another one. Go back to our document, we navigate the same way. We'll go to the down arrow next to next footnote, I have to take us to the previous footnote. Next footnote, we customize our endnotes the same way by clicking on the drop down, it opens up the footnote and no dialog box.

This time and notes is checked. It's telling us it's going to put it at the end of the document. We could tell it at the end of the section when if we wanted and the numbering we want to use numbering continuous and where to apply it to just the section or the whole document. Let's go ahead and apply it. Double click to go down to them. zoom in a little bit so we can see it better, and it changed it.

Go back up to our document. And again, you'll notice if I hover over the note gives me the little piece of paper and it tells me the a note information. I delete the note the same way, highlight it and delete it. I scroll down to my bottom, it now has just my one end note. Let's go back up to our document. I can add a continuation notice, just like I did with footnotes, so we'll switch our view.

Go to draft, go back to references, show notes, the EndNote pane, I'm going to click on the down arrow, click on EndNote continuation notice, type in what you want the notice to be I can also change the separator. So let's go ahead and do that. Double click on it to highlight it, change it to whatever you want. Let's click show notes to get back to our document. And now let's switch back to our Print Layout View. Let's zoom back out and let's go down and look at our EndNote or it's changed it for us.

If I want to reset the separation, I can go back into my endnotes. change back to our draft view. Go back to the references tab, click show notes. Go to the EndNote separator and click Reset. And you can do that also for the footnotes. As a review for this module, we've gone over the mechanics of working with footnotes and endnotes I've shown you how to insert, customize, navigate, delete, and also how to create the footnote and EndNote continuation notice and change the separator.

Before we leave this module Let's take a short quiz to make sure you understand footnotes and then notes
