What is a Script Analysis: Breaking a script down with Markings to indicate important shifts in the story and character. In understanding the character, one must understand what’s happening from moment to moment in each scene. One way of doing this is through script analysis. To break down the script, first read it multiple times to grasp the material. Then, take each scene and mark your script with markings such as, during important changes such as shifts in tone, attitude, or topic of conversation. Another word describing these changes is called a beat. To further elaborate, here’s how to do it! Please be sure to note scene changes by looking for setting changes, time passes, or switch of characters. As mentioned during the character development video, please be sure to read the script and asks yourself simple questions about your character like “How” Why” and “What” throughout the reading. Understanding the character’s objective is useful to spark action during the scenes. Be sure to jot down your thoughts about your character near the lines. Circle words that you are unsure of the meaning or pronunciation. Do your research by looking up the words. Also, highlight your character’s lines and notate your cue lines. A cue line is a line in one character’s dialogue that starts the dialogue for the next character.
