About the Class
For the benefit of the developing scholar and writer, Lesson 1 addresses the big-picture ideas of academic publishing, such as:
- Why it matters to an institution.
- Different kinds of scholarship.
- Getting to know important journals in your discipline.
- Turning thesis and dissertation work into a publication.
This lesson also includes two text documents:
- A glossary of terms used in academia. writing, and publishing.
- A self-guided activity to conduct to get better acquainted with (and more comfortable with) journals in your discipline.
This lesson is best used as a starting point, to be followed by Lesson 2 (The Topic Sentence); Lesson 3 (Writing the Literature Review), and Lesson 4 (Organizing and Writing Your Article).

Requirements
There are no special requirements to take this course. It is designed for graduate students and new or developing scholars in education, social sciences, life sciences, health, human services, human development, public policy, modern languages, English as a Second Language or English as a foreign language teaching, guidance, and counseling, psychology, and more. It may not be the best fit for mathematics, physics, and other theoretical sciences.
