Here's a handy list of some of the basic supplies you will need. In the upcoming lectures in this section, we will look at all of the materials in more detail.

  • A sturdy surface to create your piece. A wooden panel, cradled panel, liquid art panel, or piece of MDF board will work much better than a canvas. You can also use canvas panels for smaller pieces.
  • Safety equipment. A suitable level workstation is essential, and make sure to cover it in thick plastic. You will also need disposable gloves and alcohol wipes (or alcohol and baby wipes). Depending on the brand of resin, or your sensitivity, you may also want to wear a suitable respirator that has been rated to protect against fumes. If you plan to crack your own glass for embellishments, then eye safety glasses are essential.
  • Basic painting and art supplies - pencil, brushes, a level to check your work surface, masking tape
  • Resin. A good quality 2-part epoxy resin. Look for one that has UV protection built-in.
  • Resin mixing supplies. Stirring sticks and spatulas, mixing cups in various sizes.
  • Other resin supplies. A chef's torch for popping bubbles in your resin. For larger pieces or where you want to move the resin, you can use a heat gun.
  • Colorants for your resin. Mica powders and pigments, acrylic paints or inks, metallic pigments, dyes and tints made especially for resin, even certain sprays paints can work. Sparkly colorants suit this application perfectly.
  • Embellishments. Here is where you can really go wild gutters are an obvious choice, but you can also include beads, crystals, gemstones, crushed glass, metallic leaves, and lots more.

You can also find a visual list of materials and where to buy them here.

Check out the videos in this section for more examples of the products you will need, and those which are my favorites for resin geodes.
