In this video, we're going to cover the difference between confidence and competence. Now I know it's easy to get confused as to the biggest differences here between the actual confidence and competence, because there's a lot of similarities, but there's a lot of differences as well. And I want to walk you through those here in this particular video. So let's go right ahead and jump in here. Now, as I mentioned, confidence and competence, essentially go hand in hand because of the fact that competence, that's your ability to do something you are competent in, being able to talk to strangers, your competence and being able to play a specific sport, right? But with confidence, that's your belief about your competence, right?
And so you can have complete confidence in a particular area and not be very competent, but because of that confidence and your belief within yourself, You can become competent very easily, and a lot more easier than people that are just kind of like trying and learning and don't have very much belief in themselves in their abilities, right? So each of us has our own individual experiences, beliefs and values that make us perceive life in our own individual way. And everyone has their own perception of reality, because here's the thing. Perception is reality. And so that gives everyone their own unique model of the world. Now, as you can see over here in this cartoon drawing, they have an individual there that's going in for an interview, who was talking about that they have a drive ambition, self confidence, but what they're looking for is competence, right?
And that's the biggest difference there. Somebody who has competence has done something before. They are well versed in it. They have gone through it multiple times, right and they know the pitch For the pros and the cons of doing something, right. And so if you have competence in your abilities, that means that you're going to do something a lot easier and a lot better than most people who don't, right? But that doesn't necessarily mean you're going to be competent, right?
And when it comes to competence without confidence, this is someone who is very competent, right, understands what they need to do have done it before, but they lack confidence, and that is what keeps them to be stuck. So just imagine for a moment, somebody who is not a good public speaker, right? They don't have the confidence in them being able to go out and actually speak in public. However, it's not that they don't have the competence because if you think about it, I'm sure they don't have any problems speaking, right. It's not that they're speaking and they have trouble actually talking and pronouncing words and forming sentences right? But it's the fact that they are combining speaking and having speaking be within a crowded public place of, you know, group of people.
And so they are competent in speaking but they lack confidence in their ability to perform within that particular context. Right. And just because somebody knows what to do, they have the knowledge, they have the competence to do something. And they don't take any action. They don't do anything with it. They're no better off than someone who is completely incompetent is clueless right?
And they don't really know what they're doing but is willing to take action and learn as they go right because the proper food of knowledge is action. Right? A lot of people will say, knowledge is power. Well, action of that new found knowledge is really what is important here because you can know everything and anything about something. But if you don't put it into use, if you don't put that into action, then you're not going to be able to see the fruits of that labor. And a great story to illustrate this would be myself when I was first starting in digital marketing.
In that space where I was learning how to run ads, I was learning how to do SEO, I was learning all these different things, right so that I can become competent. However, what I did is I learned and I learned and I learned, I went through all these courses, I read all these books, I did all these different things so that I can make sure that I knew exactly what to do before I even got started. However, what I found is that, you know what, it's not really important to know everything prior to getting started. You want to be able to have enough information for you to be dangerous. However, a lot of the growth and a lot of the confidence is going to come from actually putting it into use, right putting it into actual action because it was my lack of confidence in fear of the Unknown is what led me to not want to take action because I felt that I needed to know everything prior to even making a move and taking action, right paralysis by analysis.
So making sure that you understand the confidence and competence difference here. Again, you can have all the competence in the world, you can know everything in anything you need to know about a particular area, but it's not about what you know, it's about what you do with that particular information that knowledge you acquire, okay? So whenever you're feeling stuck, whenever you feel like you have to know everything in order to, you know, make a move into take action. There's three different types of beliefs that are going to allow you to easily take action and get over your fear of, you know, failing and fear of, you know, looking like you need to know everything in order to succeed because that's what a lot of people preach, right. Make sure you have all your ducks in a row. Make sure that you know exactly what you need to do and a lot of times It's about just moving forward with a little bit of knowledge that you have and then being able to adjust and modify as you go.
So, three key beliefs here that will enable you to escape being stuck. Number one, you do not need to know everything to get started, right? All you need to know is enough to be able to take action upon and then learn and then modify as you go. Number two, you are a resourceful person. This needs to be known in your being this needs to be known in every single cell of your body because you have been resourceful your entire life. And number three, if you don't know the answer to a particular question you may have, if you just not sure how to go about something, you can always find the answer to that particular question or find somebody who may be able to help you find that answer.
Right. You are resourceful, that is who you are, that is who you are as an individual as a human being. So anything thing that is thrown at you, you will be able to overcome. I like this little graphic here, this little cartoon graphic here because it has somebody here who is on a desert island. And they have used wood here to spell out the word help right? To see if somebody come in and actually help them and pick them up right?
However, them being resourceful is them over here on B, where they have used the actual wood here to now create a raft right? instead of actually trying to spell out help and just sitting there and hoping and wishing and praying they have taken matters into their own hands, and they've become resourceful and being able to build this particular raft in order for them to get out of their situation. And it's okay to acknowledge that you may have a certain feeling Hey, I feel stuck, hey, I feel this way or that way. However, immediately replace that With your thought of you know what, I am stuck, I feel stuck at this particular situation at this moment. However, that doesn't define me, I know that I am a resourceful person. And I will get unstuck because I have the ability.
I have the wherewithal, right the knowledge to be able to take myself out of this situation where I feel stuck and into a more resourceful situation, because I know that I'm capable of doing that. So any given time that you are feeling stuck, you're feeling as if you need to know everything before making a move, you need to get something ironed out or you don't really understand something, you are able to go out and look for that answer and or also find somebody that can help you figure that out, but you just sitting there and just hoping and wishing and praying that it's going to get sorted out by itself is not the way to go about it. The way to go about it is being resourceful Knowing that you have the ability to find out what you're looking for so you can move forward. So that's going to be here for this video and we'll see you on the next one.
