Okay, so just a quick overview now of some other plugins you can load. So first of all, let's go into our plugins directory. As we've just done the lecture on speed. One thing to say is keep your plugins down to a minimum. Another thing is to never have unactivated plugins there, it's much better to delete them, this actually speeds up your website a little bit, I'm just going to delete those two and delete the files. So I've left this one akismet.
That's because this one is quite important. This stops you getting spam. And it comes with WordPress. So I'm going to go ahead and activate this. And to get Kismet to work, you have to enter your API key. If you don't have an API key, you just click there and sign up here to get an API key.
You've updated the options and that's it, you can just forget about it now, because you'll be more or less protected from spam. I say more or less because spammers got a bit worse in the last year or so it used to be the case that Kismet was all you needed. However, nowadays, it depends how big your site is and how long it's been around for. But if you're still having a problem with spam comments, then this is of course, if you're still having a problem with comments spam with a Kismet, then I would suggest you try this plugin, which is called grow map anti spam bot plugin. And what that does, it just puts a little checkbox after the common input form where people can check that box if they are a human being and spam bots can't and very, very simple thing that won't slow your site at all.
Really, it stops virtually 99% of comment spam. Another great blogging plugin is subscribe to comments. And this is where if you've left a comment on the website, and somebody goes Long answers is you get an email. And this is great for user engagement because it encourages people to come back and have a conversation on your site. And this is good for SEO, it adds content to your site. It's user generated content.
So you don't even have to write it yourself. And it just looks great. If you have loads of comments after each blog post, it means that the blog is being read, it's engaging people, etc, etc. So a great plugin for that is called, subscribes, comments reloaded. There it is. So I'm gonna install that activate.
And that's all you have to do. Now, if you log out and refresh here. You'll see here, you've got a little checkbox, so notify me of follow up comments by email. And you can also subscribe without commenting. So a great plug in there to increase your user engagement. Another plugin to install if you want to increase time on site Related Posts plug in.
So if you search for related posts, you'll see you've got a choice of a few plugins there. And what that does, I'll show you on my site, if you click on any of the posts, at the end of it, there's a selection of other posts. And these are determined by category and the tags of the post you are reading. So there'll be other similar nature and on a similar similar subject there will be there after every post. So people who are engaged with your content, after they finished reading it, they can click on another post and go on and read that which they wouldn't have done. Otherwise related post plugin is quite a good idea.
And lastly, it's great to have some sort of backup plugin. A good plugin you can use for backing up and optimizing your database is WP DB manager. You see already actually gives me a little warning here about my ht access file. I'm sure that's okay. But it's a good example of how the plugin can give you warnings about security issues as well. I'll check that with my host, but I'm pretty sure that that's okay.
It tells us what to do anyway in order to tackle that issue. But you can see here on the right hand side, it's got a tab called database and how you can backup your database, which is very important. You can also manage that backup, which means that you can actually get it sent to your email address, and you can optimize the database. And this is a really good idea of something to do when your site is a few months old. You've got a few blog posts and a few comments. You should certainly do it once a month anyway, and just click here optimize and it's all done that may well speed up your site as well.
Okay, so there's a few examples of some plugins you might want to use on your WordPress site. Thank you very much. Goodbye.
