Hello, this is Rob here from Rob coven.com. And today I'd like to show you how to put text on an image. It's an easy way to create an image for an otherwise hard to illustrate idea for a blog post or a magazine article. So say you want to do something like create a website, and you can't for the life of you find a picture of someone creating a website because that would be fairly boring. It'll be just some person sitting behind a computer screen. This is a good alternative and it can be quite visually appealing.

So we're going to put some text on the image and I've already decided the font I'm going to use. It's called American typewriter. And in order to get the type onto the image, of course, we use the Type tool or press T on the keyboard bored, and then we want to select our funds. Now in order to put type on Photoshop, you either click once, or you click and then drag, and that will give you a text box and it means that the text will flow within blocks. So that would be more advisable for longer paragraphs of text. But we're not doing that we're just going to have a couple of lines so it'd be better if we just had a one click text layer.

So we're going to get rid of this text box. And the way we do that is actually by getting up the Layers palette and throwing away the text layer. So let's start again and just add the text to the image. We just click once with the text tool and then start typing. So as you can see Whereas you can't see it's come out at the wrong color in the wrong size. It's white and very small.

So let's click back on the text layer. And still with our text tool selected, we can click there and select a text color using the color picker, and I want to have a dark blue, something that's going to show up against this light blue button. So locate that and the text has gone blue. Now we could make it bigger using free transform, but I'm going to change the pixel size up here and choose a larger size like 60 pixels. And you'll see that the line height hasn't increased along with the font size that we've just changed and when this happens, you need to go to Window character. And in the character palettes, you'll see that the font size is 60 as we selected up In the option bar, but the line height or letting has stayed at the size it had been originally, when the sizes get very big, sort of more than 20 pixels or more than 20 point, then the line height tends to be around about the same as the font size.

So we'll go 60 and 60. Now you can see the words are reasonably spaced apart. In fact, if anything, they're a bit too far apart from each other. So I'm going to cut that down to 50. And now the website word is slightly closer to the Create a. And I think that's nice because we want to get them nice and compact together.

So still up here on the option bar, we can choose whether we want it left aligned, centered or right aligned. I'm going to keep it as centered and we want to make sure it's nice and big. So I'm going to go free transform and make it even bigger. So at this stage, I'm going to copy that layer just In case I need a live copy of the type, and I'm going to make one of those invisible. So the next stage you may not have to do if you are on Photoshop CC, but if you're on any of the Creative Suite versions of Photoshop, you need to rasterize the text layer in order to transform it on to the button. And in order to do that, you right click on the text layer, and you rasterize type.

And as you can see in the Layers palette, you have lost that T icon that you used to have. And now the layer thumbnail is exactly the same as any other photographic layer in a Photoshop document. ie it's now made up out of pixels. Whereas before when it was a text layer, it was made out of vector. You could edit the text so if I made a mistake with one of the Words I could go back and type it out again. However, with this new rasterize layer, which is converted into pixels, of course, I cannot change the spelling, and I cannot edit that text.

But what I can do to it is transform it in a way that it looks like it's written onto that baton. And the way I'm going to do that is with free transform, as you know, that's Command or Control T, and we need to fit it on to this button. And the way you do that isn't only by clicking on the corners and holding down Shift which is what I'm doing, which is just making it larger or smaller proportionately, you need to click on the various corners and middle grabbing points whilst holding down Command or Control. So the best thing to do to start off with is hold down one of the middle points there and this one, turn it into a parallelogram as I'm holding down Command or Control, and what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna put it down like that. So it roughly follows the shape of the button.

And at this stage you can still hold down shift and make the whole box smaller. But you can also hold down the Command or Control key again and just make slight adjustments to the corners and when you do this, the corner moves, but the rest of the box doesn't say you can get it to fit more or less exactly the way you wanted to. And when you're happy with it, you hit return after you finished with the free transform tool, and that is how you put text on a button in this image and I'll attach the PSD to this lecture. Thank you very much for listening. This has been Rob from Rob carbonite.com. Goodbye
