Intro to the Pitch Process

In this short chapter, we're going to reflect on how to customize your pitch for the intended recipient.

This section is designed to give you an idea of what to do during your pitching process. I will be going into more detail about ways to connect that will put you ahead of those who are merely cold calling industry people and saying the equivalent to ‘hey, read my stuff’. But for now, consider this brief section an opportunity to see if one method, or recipient appeals more to you than another. Personally, when I began my journey, I did all the things. I tried as many methods as I could discover or think of. “Throw everything at it,” that was my mantra and that was exactly what I did. So, if having an agent pitch your work on your behalf is a route you’re interested in taking, then move in that direction. Just know that’s one route, but not the only one. One of the best things about the TV/Film industry is that there aren’t any hard and fast rules. Regardless, you’ll want to tweak your pitch to whoever it is you’re pitching. Consider the intended recipient, the setting, and the circumstances.

You may have a massive document of completed notes about your book series, but does that mean you should blurt out “Hey, I have a book that would make an awesome film for your studio and proceed to hand them your life’s work? Only if you want to be met with “Sorry, but unsolicited submissions are not being considered.” And the door, physical or otherwise, closing on your opportunity. Alternatively, if you can be conversational if the situation warrants it. Mention that you met them, or someone relating to them at such and such event, and they said you might be interested in such and such genre. It opens the door to conversation and creates a more promising link. They may be more likely to engage, and eventually, hear what you have to offer.

So the sole purpose of this short section is to get you thinking about how you will deliver your pitch, and how you can tailor it to the person you are pitching based on their role in the industry.

Best part? No homework ;)
