Now it's time to talk about packing. My best advice is don't pack everything, pack some things, just making that decision relieves a lot of stress. You can get things there. I know a lot of people will tell you everything's expensive in America. There are expensive short stores and they are some stores that are much less expensive. You will find a range of prices.
So don't get overly panicked about things inexpensive. pack a mix of things. If you'll be cooking, save some space in your suitcase for cooking things, perhaps a pressure cooker, a couple pots or pans, a spoon, couple spoons for cooking some knives. And not enough that you could make a simple meal for two people but Not everything that's in your kitchen or not everything that you think you'll need. The same thing goes with clothes. Don't pack all the clothes that you think you'll need.
If you think I'm going to need four pairs of jeans, pack three, and buy one pair after you get there, the same shirts and sweaters. That way you'll have some clothes that you'll feel more American in, things that you've got there and that just match up with what Americans are wearing. It's good to think about having one formal outfit. You may want to get that now or you may choose to get that after you arrive in the US. for business or university meetings. women generally wear pumps with a medium heel and dress slacks or a skirt with a blouse.
Men wear a suit at a time. Americans don't wear formal clothes very often. But when it is required, it is required. The weather at your destination will also impact what clothes you will need. Go online and check out the weather during several different months of the year. Make sure you look at the temperatures in both degrees Celsius and Fahrenheit.
Start getting used to hearing temperatures in Fahrenheit and understanding what that means. Also, the amount of walking that you will be doing will impact what shoes you need. Look at a campus map and try to see how much walking will be involved for you. Many campuses are large and it may take 20 minutes to walk from your dorm to class. It may even take 30 minutes. So look at a campus map now.
What about food. Some Indians travel with lots of spices and other Indian cooking ingredients. Others prefer to just get all their groceries at the Indian grocery stores in the United States. I'd say this depends on you. If you do choose to bring food items with you buy items that are in manufactured sealed packages. And don't bring fresh fruits or seeds.
Do pack some things that you enjoy. pack some books or games. If you have some favorite music, make sure you bring that and pack something to go on your walls or desk something to decorate your place and make it look like your own space. Pack something that reminds you of home. Generally, Americans decorate their dorm rooms to have no decorations looks too Stark and bleak. So bring something along with you to make your dorm room or your apartment looks homey when you're packing, but heavier things, your shoes, pressure cooker books in the bottom of your suitcase.
And that way when you lift your suitcase up, they won't shift to the bottom causing everything inside to get messed up. Also pack anything that you want to protect in plastic bags, especially if you don't have a waterproof suitcase. You don't know your suitcase could be left on the tarmac of an airport for a while in the rain, or pack anything in a plastic bag. If you're worried about shampoo or some liquid in your suitcase, spilling onto it. Any silk clothing or something that you wouldn't want to get ruined. Actually just don't pack shampoo.
You can get shampoo cheaply in the US good quality for a good price. I do recommend that you buy your bedsheets after you get to the US if you're going into a dorm room. The mattress size may be different. Since we have fitted bottom sheets that matters. A normal twin bed is 75 inches long, but lots of colleges have extra long twin beds that are 80 inches long and require a special sheet size. Pack your carry on carefully.
Put anything valuable in your carry on. Make sure all your documents are protected for the jacket in your carry on. Just in case it's cold on the airplane. Do pack a snack, anything in a sealed bag like chips or biscuits or peanuts. I always like to take a chocolate bar for when I'm flying. It gives you something to nibble on if you don't like the airplane food or if your flight is delayed.
Also pack one or two changes of clothes again, just in case you don't know for sure that all your Like you're just going to make it through. If it's a day late, at least you have something to change into. weigh your suitcases before you go to the airport. That way you can arrive at the airport with peace of mind that you're within the weight limit. You're ready to go. Pick up your suitcases and walk out that door.
On this side, you will have somebody else to carry your suitcases for you. On that side, you'll be carrying them yourself. There's a packing checklist in your notes. Take a look at it as you go as you pack.
