Hi. In this session of planning for your move, we're going to cover documents, finances and medical issues. I expect you're already aware of what documents you need. Make sure you leave copies of your most important documents with a family member. So, your documents what documents you'll have besides your passport and visa, you will have your i 20, or your DS 2019. Those are issued by your university.
You should have proof of enrollment or your acceptance letter with you. carry with you transcripts from your previous study and carry with you records of your immunizations. If you're not sure about what documents you need, work with the international student office at your university. Remember that international student office Your friends, they are there to help you. Ask them every question you need to ask. Don't be shy about asking questions.
When you're entering the US, you'll get an i 94 card and keep all those documents in a safe place and keep copies of all those documents. When you're traveling, you'll want to have the originals in your backpack or shoulder bag or purse. Keep a careful eye on that when you're in the airport. on the airplane, you can put it under seat and relax a little bit but inside the airport is a place you do need to be very careful about keeping an eye on your documents. take with you a copy of all those documents in your carry on and put a third copy of all your documents in your check luggage. You're pretty well covered then on your I 20 or ds 2019 There will be estimated costs for your university.
So the first cost will be your tuition and fees. That's what you're paying to study. Next will be room and board board refers to your food. If you're living on campus you'll have on campus housing charges. If you choose to live off campus, you'll have to manage those expenses yourself. And remember, besides the rent fee, they'll also be electricity and perhaps some other hidden costs.
So you want to just be sure you're aware of what the total apartment situation is going to cost you. If you're living off campus, you can often choose to still take campus meal plan that would give you just lunch each day, and that might be helpful in both giving you a chance to be on campus for lunch and make some friends hang out with some other students during lunchtime as well as saving you the time Helping to prepare as many meals. There'll be an estimated amount there for books and that is purely an estimate. But college books in the US are expensive. Our kids books have ranged between $5 and $200. That's a huge range for one book.
So you will want to look for ways to save money on buying books. And usually the campus store will have some used books. That's the first and quickest way to save money. You may need to get to the campus bookstore quickly, because sometimes those use books sell out. You're not the only one that wants to save money. every college student wants to save money.
You can buy University books online, there's some good websites for that. But if you do that, you will need a credit card. And if you do that, the best way to do it is to enter the actual is BM number into the search that I ESPN. will be different for different editions of the book. And that way, you're sure that you're getting the same edition that the professor is using. That's pretty important.
There'll be estimated expenses there for personal expenses as well as transportation. Those depend on what kind of spending money you use and how much you travel. And you're spending money. Don't forget, you'll be probably having a cell phone, you'll be doing some shopping for food, you'll be doing your laundry, all those things add up. And then last on that list will probably be the amount that you'll be paying towards health insurance. Health insurance is required for international students.
And it's a very important part of having a successful stay in the US. Now that we're talking about health, let's think about your medical records. Make sure you take with you your immunizations, you will probably need to have a TB test. You can get that at most medical facilities. Make sure you do that a few weeks before you go, because you will have to go back in a few days after the TB test and have it read. Besides that you will need to carry with you any prescriptions and especially carry with you prescriptions for your eyeglasses as well as medications.
Once you get to campus, you'll be getting information about your health insurance info. Don't think that it's not important, read over it, familiarize yourself a little bit with it at least there should be a health insurance card, carry that card in your wallet. There should be an on campus Medical Center. That's your first place to go if you get sick. If you need to go to the emergency room, you need to have that health insurance card with you. So carry it with you in your wallet.
I hope you'll stay healthy hoped that you're feeling more ready to get going and to for that flight, and I hope that you've noted down a few things that you want to do perhaps this afternoon, perhaps in the next week or two, but keep going so that you're ready to leave when the time comes.
