Alright, so for this lesson we're going to talk about animation in procreate, we're not really going to talk about the principles of animation, because that is a separate whole entity of learning and things that you need to know on how to actually animate characters, and how to animate all sorts of things. But what I'm going to show you in this lesson is how this animation works in procreate four. So for that, I've prepared three different examples here. And the first one is quite simple. Then we move on into a little bit more complex example. And lastly, one example that has background mid ground, it has a moving object that's separate from the background and mid ground.
And you can even add, you can go ahead and even add a foreground example if you wanted to. So let's start with the first example. So I can kind of explain as best as possible How does animation work in procreate so Just opening this file right here you see three layers. I've named them A, B and C with different colors just so I can show you as easy as possible. How does animation work in procreate, and the premise is actually quite simple. procreate understands each layer has one frame.
So basically one layer equals one frame. So the way that you can go about it, you can turn on and off each layer as you're animating. And by the end of it, you just have to go into the Actions menu and then you're going to go into the share menu. And then here at the bottom you have three options, which is something we've already covered. Once we were going through all of the sections here on the procreate UI. So you have the animated GIFs the animated PNG, finally the animated mp4 file.
For this lesson, I'm going to be focusing on animated GIFs So once we click on the animated GIF option, you see here, a screen with a rather small thumbnail size. Unfortunately, there's no way to actually see this preview a little bigger at the moment for this version of procreate four. And right underneath this preview, you see the frames per second and the option of having a transparent background or not. And finally, the two options off exporting a gift that's a little lighter. That's what we call the web ready gift, or the full resolution, which will respect the dimensions of your canvas. So notice that if we scroll this bar a frames per second, up or down, you get a different place speed.
And just so you know, procreate can handle animations up to 60 frames per second. So right here, I've actually slow down the animation in France for a second so you can see the change that change between the three letters. And that is again just showing you how procreate actually understands or how does it play animation so you can understand how Animation works in procreate. This was the simplest example. And now let's move on to the medium or a little bit more complex example. So at this point in this lesson, you might be wondering if, if everything is in one layer.
So that is equal one frame. Is it possible to have multiple layers so that I don't have to merge everything into one layer? So is equal that specific right? So the answer for that question is yes, you can have multiple layers still be equal one frame and how procreate handles that challenge is by letting you actually use groups as frames in a nutshell, whenever you have groups here in procreate, I'm just opening the groups here. So you can see each one of these groups and how they are composed of multiple layers. And once they close these groups, and I play the gift file, you still see the A, B and C, flashing with their respective elements.
There are actually in separate layers, but because they're grouped into one group per frame, they are playing correctly. So this is a way for you to actually have multiple layers. And now you have to actually translate into whatever you're thinking as an as an animation. For example, you can be a running character that's running past like a few, a few flying objects that could be like, let's say, autumn leaves, and this character is running through, you can work on the animation of the character, add the leaves later on as separate layers, as long as these leaves are grouped with a character for each frame. Now, finally, you may be thinking, What if I actually have stationary objects, such as in this case here, this is a very crude example, I'm just showing you actually very, very crude and clear examples on how to actually then be able to show you how to animate appropriate but now the question is, what if we have stationary objects with moving objects.
So in this case, right here, I'm just going to show you the final product. Let's say we want to have the sliding cube, Thor's the scene comes from outside screen, left slides all the way To the right and disappears. And then maybe in the far background, you want to add a sky later on. And then we also have a ground plane. So in this example, here, we only have the yellow mountains and the red floor, the red ground. But those, let's just say those are stationary.
So at this point here for procreate for procreate doesn't really allow you to have a separate layer that's going to be static. So the only way this can actually work is once again using the group's technique. So with the group's technique, as long as you duplicate your groups, as you're working in your file, say that you always know that you'll have the ground and the mountain and those aren't really changing, you can always make a copy of that group and just store it at the top of your timeline and just keep working on it. And as long as you have that backup group turned off, that doesn't show up on the animated GIF, which brings us to the next tip for how to He appropriate, whatever groups or whatever layers you have turned off here, those layers, they don't come out as frames once you export your gift.
So, for that, I just want to show you something really quickly, I do have one group right here, which is named 01 rant, which has a red square off a different color. Now just notice on how when I play this gift with this lit group on, you do see a pop up that pinkish kind of reddish color there in the middle of the animation. Whereas when I turn off that group, and I again, click on to re export the gifts, you don't see that frame anymore and rather you see maybe if you're really keen on an animation I you do see us the smallest chunk there. That is because missing a frame as the square is traveling from left to right. So that about covers the animation principles of procreate. So make sure that if you're working with more complex scenes that you are using groups, and you're turning on and off groups, depending on how you want to play These animations Also make sure to duplicate layers and store them as backups if you have repetitive assets in your animations and lastly, go have some fun with animation in procreate because it does allow you to quickly export files such as GIFs.
Mp4 and animated PNG s. So this was the last lesson here on this course. You have finally concluded congratulations. And the next lesson will be your graduation. So I can't wait to see you there.
