Let's discuss rosin. The kind of rosin that I use is that guy and I'll try to pronounce it for you right there. leavin Zeller. That's what it says if it doesn't want to focus in on me, okay? Well just trust me that it says Lehman's ziller Okay, and it's a German it's a German type of rosin. This is what it looks like.

Now when you get your rosin chances are stores aren't going to carry leavin Zeller rosin, but you don't have to get leavin zella Ross, you can get just about any type of rosin. And you can kind of see that this is kind of a darker Amber. And the darker that your rosin is typically means that the largest stickier it is and the lighter the rosin, the less sticky that it is. And what that means for you as a violin player is how gritty of a sound, how loud and gritty is going to be versus soft and fluffy sounds or soften here he sounds so darker, grittier and louder, which requires someone to have a firmer grip, and faster and bow to get a clean sound. And for those of us who are might be beginners or having a little trouble with speed on our bow, might want to go with a lighter color rosin, which will really help with that.

So when we use rosin on our bow, especially if you have a brand new bow, like a brand new one, you buy it online, you buy it in a store, it won't come With rosin on it, so if you try to draw it across your bowl, it won't make any sound, it makes this weird whistling sound. So, what we got to do is we have to put rosin on your bow. Now, your bow, if you take a look at an honor microscope, it has these little teeth on it. And these little teeth will get the rosin hooked in them. So if you have a brand new rosin block or a rosin cake, chances are it'll be very shiny at the top and you can see mine is broken in a couple of chips out of it, but it's not shiny at all. You can see parts of it are shiny, but most of it is really subdued.

That means you can sell it I've broken it in. Well, when they're brand new, they're really shiny. And sometimes if you get really inexpensive rosin or rosin from China, it's hard to break the rosin because as it comes in on a boat from China, Or across the seas. Typically, the humidity will create a gloss over the top of the rosin block. And it makes it hard for you to break it in. So what we do with those types of rosin blocks to break them in, or the start to break in, we take like a coin, and we just scuff up the top, and then it makes it a lot easier to get into the rosin.

So what we want to do when we're starting our rosin block, I'm pretending that this is a brand new rosin block just to break it in. You simply start at the frog and go about four inches and go back and forth and put a fair amount of pressure on it. And you'll, you can hear that mine has rosin on because you hear if it didn't have rosin on it, you would make kind of a a Wisley sound that Morrow And once you started to get rosin on, eventually you hear that you hear hear. Now, you can see the difference in my bow. And I'm using this black bow for demonstration purposes. And because I like the sound of this black bow for the kind of music that I play, but you can definitely see where the rosin is on the bow, and where it's not on the bowl.

So my bow has a fair amount of rosin on it as it is, but when you bring in a boat for the first time, pretending it's new, you'd go and little patches, and then up to the bowl for little patches, and then after the bulk, a little patches and after both little patches. If you already have a ball that has rosin on it, you'll simply go from the frog. Without going in little patches all the way to the tip of the bone. And you can kind of hear that sound all the way through my bone. So you can already tell it has rosin. So it really at this point, I'm putting way too much rosin on my bone.

But that's okay. I'll just shake it off when it's done. Right. So the reason for this is we want to have even an application of Ross on our bone. Right? And you'll be able to hear when there's not enough rosin, because you're gonna hear those Wisley spots or not the parts, right?

Does it make sense? Okay, so, and as you can kind of see on my bone now, it went from that black to this nice kind of wider, wider part. Now, you can tell us way too much rosin, right. So all I have to do You can't see it on the video, but all I'm doing is whacking the ball on my, on my leg, who's whacking the ball on my leg to get rid of the excess rosin, and then we get a good tone on our instrument. So you'll notice in this video, after I've taught you how to hold the bow correctly, as far as classical is concerned, you might see me right up on my bow. In some demonstration purposes, this is a typical fiddle hold for a very heavy bow.

And that is not a classical style. So if you see me riding up on the bow, you'll know why. So right now, if you're learning classical music, you're back here. Where we have originally learned, if you're playing fiddle music, kind of then that is going to be the gamut of where you can put your, your your hand, whatever feels comfortable for you.
