What we need to do now is we need to check our local rankings how we perform in local search. And to do that, we're going to use a tool called geo rancor. So this is a URL, you're going to need to access this tool, ww dot geo rancor.com forward slash, local dash rancor dash checker. So, pause the video, go there and follow along. So here we are in the local rank checker and tracker. So we're going to do is put a URL in, we're going to put a keyword in here.
Now keyword doesn't mean a single word, it can mean a single word or a phrase that people typically search for. So someone might search because they want a commercial photographer and that is a keyword. What we want to do is we want to get our top five keywords and repeat this process for each of these and make a column on our spreadsheet for each of those keywords so that we can see which keyword we're actually competing for and how well it's going to do over time. So what we would then do is we would come down, make sure we have local By city identified, we would put our country in there. And we want to change this to one city. So pick the area you serve.
If it's a rural area, Tri County or anything like that, if you're in the US, this will take a zip code, but pick the geographical area you're targeting. Now, what we're going to add in here is Peterborough. And then we can click Create Report. And this is our report. So we can see that if someone searches for commercial photography, my page is going to show which you can see over here. Now when we hover over the score of six, we're position six page one, which is good.
So that's not a bad score, and it's showing me which page as well is competing for that so I can make a note of that. So you can see, we're actually competing quite well. So here's another search we've done portrait photography, and as you can see when we check for our rankings On this not found. So that's really, really interesting. For some reason, we are not ranking for portrait photography. So if that was something we wanted to cover in our business, it has to seriously work on that.
So I just wanted to show you that a good result in a bad result doesn't necessarily mean your website's performing. Because although you might be competing for one keyword, which is one of your services, there might be other things that you're not catching. So it's really important to figure out the five keywords you want to compete for. And we will be going through the keyword analysis and how to figure out your keywords later in the course. So just start with the five right now start with the ones you actually want to use that you think are the best. And later on, we can go back and we can qualify that at the end of the course and you might come back and just adjust this a little bit later on.
