So let's look at building backlinks. What we need to do is we need to find genuine opportunities. But we also need to understand some content types to give us an idea of how to create some backlinks. So have a look at that. One of the things we need to do is figure out what are local authority sites. So we need to figure out what some of those good backlinks and if you remember that search earlier, that can be used in the same way to actually help us find good authority sites.
So we search for SME heroes and our postcode. We might do that for a competitor and then find authority sites that have they've managed to get content on. So we want to make sure they are an authority site and they usually if they're appearing high in search for a simple search, they are but we would do our due diligence, and we would go and make sure using the last tutorial using the OSC tool on Mars. We would go and make sure they are genuine and then we want to make sure We figure out what type of content they like. So submit content they need don't submit content, you think they need actually have a look at what types of content they do publish, we also have to make sure they don't use nofollow HTML tags when they link back to us. So we can use open Site Explorer again to check that we can put a web page in there where we know there's a link, and then we can check, did they put a nofollow on that?
And if they do, use nofollow, you can always request that you want to submit some content, but you do want them to remove the nofollow. Is that possible before you submit content. So we want to make sure we've got these genuine links. And sometimes you just need to build a relationship with the person who runs a site. So you need to reach out you need to give them a reason. And when we're sharing our content, here's some of the things we might consider sharing.
So if we've got a local newspaper website, a press release or a new site, a press release is a great way of getting In a backlink, now, we could create local resource guides. And if they're really useful, we might have a local council website that we're willing to share them. Or we might have a local hotel for instance, if we have top tips for visiting the area and seeing tourist attractions. The other thing we can look at is we can create interest content so we can create content that people in our local area are going to actually find interesting. So for instance, in my area, we have a truck fest every year. And that's a festival where truck drivers come and share that customize trucks and they come from all over Europe, even some from America and the share at East of England show ground.
So if I wanted to create some backlinks for that event, I would be creating some interest content for instance. And don't always think you just have to create backlinks from local sites. You can create it from international sites, but it is better if we can get it from local sites. If we can get backlinks of any type, so we could create a top 10 trucks at the show, we could actually then email a few people contact people out there that are actually sharing this type of content and say like, hey, I've got a great article here, would you be interested in, you can also share educational content. So if you educate someone, that's something people will often share. So if it's the local DIY store, and you're a painter, and decorator, and they've got a website where they share decorating tips, you might want to submit some educational content.
Something else we consider is what is called guest blogging. So if you've got a blog, what you can do is offer to write a blog for them, which would possibly contain local resource or interest content or educational content. And then make sure that you get the link back, but we need to make sure there's a nofollow link. So you can either actually create content for their website, or you can ask them to link back in an announcement to your resource. Often people will We'll welcome guests content as long as they don't feel that all the benefit is on your side. So guest blogging can be a great way to build backlinks.
Now, don't duplicate your content. So what some people do is they will post content on their blog, and then post content on another blog. And Google see two types of content are exactly the same. And what penalize one of those pieces of content, so you don't duplicate content, you always have to create fresh new content. Now, guest blogging used to provide a real strong SEO value, Google have diminished in recent years, but it still can be a very good way of creating a natural link because you're asking them to do the work. But if you can actually create the content and hand it to them, and hand the images to them and say, Look, you know, would you be interested, I'm going to write this blog.
I'm gonna write this article. I'll give you all the stuff would you be interested in put on your web page and linking back and making sure there's no follow if it's content for them, and for their readers and their viewers and it saves them doing work a lot of the time. And if you've got a good relationship, they will say, yes. So they're the types of content we want to be thinking about content that people can have a link back to, or content that actually you place on their website. And they will link back to your website from. The other thing to be aware of is charity events.
People love to be involved in charity events. So if you can create a charity event, and then ask some local businesses, just to give you some support, even if it's a blog post, they can link back to your page, and now you've got a link. Now what we have to do is make sure that the content we put out there is still relevant for our potential audience. So we have to keep relevancy in mind. What do I mean by that is if we are doing car content, so we have a custom car garriage where we help the youngsters put them really noisy exhausts on their cars as they're driving around. Maybe we're doing that We don't arrays in a charity event, for instance, that talks about fluffy cats on fluffy cat size with one a link that to our business.
So it might be road traffic, accident reduction, we might find a charity event that we can get involved in. And we can create content around that. So we want to keep it relevant to what we're talking about and relevant to our audience and make sure the links are relevant, because if you link Google see a link from an irrelevant site to your site, they will not value that link and they will not give it much value in terms of SEO. And in fact, they might even treat it as a spam link. So make sure that you stay consistent with your message and your offering doesn't mean you can't get involved in local charities that support them. But it's always better if you can link the content and make sure it's actually relevant to your business.
