What is music theory? In its simplest definition, it could be said that it is a way for us to understand, describe, share, and preserve the music that we hear in written form. It comprises of various signs, symbols, and terminology. You might say ‘oh well, why don’t you just record it to preserve it and share it that way. Very true, but back in the renaissance period the only way to keep music or to share it was to have written records of it. It all started hundreds of years ago with monks in monasteries trying to keep guides of the music and chants they sang. It was nothing more than a few scribbles and hand notation to try and help them remember music they had not sung in a while. However, it soon turned into exact guides. Hence, they would not need to remember the music at all and could just reference the notation. This helped to create new music and the spread of music worldwide. Please understand It is very possible to be able to play an instrument or to sing without any knowledge of music theory at all. The form of written music notation is actually quite rare in this modern age. It is however an invaluable tool for us as musicians and singers to help aid us in understanding music better. It helps us to write music down, perform and rehearse with other musicians, to understand and play our instruments better. In these 3 PDFs, we will take you systematically and easily through all the principle concepts of music theory. Most music theory courses integrated what we have broken up into the 3 sections.
