Hello, I'm Steven Mathur and welcome to creating a team culture of respect. Lesson One, why do you want to change your team culture? So first question, what is a team culture? And why should you care about it? One way of defining it is it's the way things are done around here. It's a set of behavioral and social norms.
It's what people expect other people to do in certain situations. And you could describe it as the sum of lots of individual bits of behavior. Importantly, your culture influences what your team does. So remember from our base module based course, we looked at the fact that people will already bring with them certain beliefs, values, ways of thinking to your team. So I'm already have these things. They'll have learned these from their parents, their grandparents, their friends, their relatives, what they see on the TV or through the internet, what they read in books or magazines, can also a big important component is their DNA.
So things tendencies, traits, they are born with individuals, they will also be influenced by those they meet in the workplace. So they'll be influencing each other as part of a team. What you're doing on these courses, which are all about changing culture, you're leveraging this to influence behavior and create a specific culture, the one that you want. So I'm going to share with you today the three steps to culture change, and we're going to use these in creating a culture of respect. So what are the three steps To call to change. The first one is to identify the culture you need and why you need it.
Secondly, to identify the behavior that will create the culture you want. And thirdly, identify what you need to do as a manager, supervisor, leader to influence that behavior. So the first question is, what culture Do you need and why? Well, I'm assuming as you've chosen this course, and it's called creating a culture of team respect, that you want to create a respect culture. Why do you want to do that? Well, it might be to do with creating a high performing team, or creating a team with individuals that support one another.
It might be to reduce team interpersonal issues, to produce a happier work environment. To create a team that respects themselves, the customer, the product, the company, etc. So it's time for an exercise and I'd like you to download the exercise sheet and jot down the answer to the following questions. Firstly, why do you want to change your team culture around respect? What has happened recently that's prompted you to want to change the culture within your team. What are the benefits to you and your team?
Have a culture of respect? So pause this video, have a little think about those questions and jot some things down on paper
