Earlier on in the course, I showed you how to prepare your speaking notes. We've also looked at how you use your body and your voice when you're speaking. Now it's time to look at how your notes can help you put all of this together. After this session, you'll have most of the tools you need to practice or even deliver a speech. But please don't forget that underneath all good speakers, is Practice, practice and practice again. No one should assume that you'll be a good speaker without practicing, no matter how experienced you are.
Indian guy and I we always practice and rehearse before giving a speech, and we think that you should do the same. We've seen that speaker notes are what you use to help you deliver your speech. There. They're to give you support and competence. So how do you use them correctly? I'll give you some basic rules and guy and he will demonstrate the good and the bad, but hopefully not the ugly.
The first thing to say is that notes are not there to be read that the scaffolding of your speech and your aid memoir, it's the delivery that counts. Whichever sorts of notes you use, they should not intrude and the audience really shouldn't be aware that you're using them. Don't wave them around. take great care if you have to turn over a page or swap cards. Cards should be transferred to the back of the pack and not just discarded. Now, if you do have a lectern that's big enough, try to place your cards all pages side by side to avoid turning them.
So now you just need to slide them Cross when you need them, and you move on to the next one. Of course, a mind map will just take up one page, so you won't have any problems with turning over. If you're using a tablet computer for your notes, make your use of it as inconspicuous as possible. And if you have a lectern, just place the tablet on it so that it's invisible to the audience. Because of the practice you've done, you should know your speech well beforehand, but you will still refer to your notes. Remember, memorize both the first sentence and last sentence of the speech so that you don't have to refer to your notes at these critical points.
I can't emphasize this enough. Take your time. And look at your notes briefly. But not while you're speaking. Pause look at your notes. Look up and begin speaking again.
It only takes a small amount of time and done this way. It doesn't interrupt the flow, and it really appears natural. Don't let your use of notes destroy your eye contact. Never, never never read your notes unless you're reading a quotation or some figures. Now, let's sit back and watch Ian. Have you been hashtag retweeted or liked?
Have you been trending or join What's up, used Instagram? Or even had your own YouTube channel? If you answer yes to any of these, then you'll undoubtedly be familiar with social media. If you don't know what I'm talking about, then please listen and be enlightened. Right well After that, I think we better ask guy to put it right. Have you been hashtags retweeted or light?
Have you been trending or joined WhatsApp, Instagram, or even had your own YouTube channel? Well, if the answer is yes to any of these, then you will no doubt be familiar with social media. If you don't know what I'm talking about, then please listen and be enlightened. Thank you, guy, and YouTube Ian. We've already said that a speech is a performance. So you can think of your notes rather like a music score.
Don't forget, you can mark things up like gestures, pauses, and any of the vocal effects you're going to use. So now you have an idea of how to write unusual speaking notes. But there are some questions you need to ask yourself and others before you choose the thought of To use. Think, where are you speaking? How big is the venue? And how long is your speech?
Is there a lectern? And is there a microphone? What is your preference in notes? Is your preference suitable for the venue? After you've asked those questions, you'll be able to choose what sort of notes to use. To misquote Winston Churchill.
We've given you the tools. Now you finish the job. So try to put these techniques together in your speech, and practice, practice, and practice again. And when you're ready, go out there and face but live audience and talking of a live audience, we'll look at that many headed beast next time. There's lots of good stuff still to come like impact. To off the cuff speaking, giving PowerPoint presentations and effective meetings.
