Everyone, it's Justin Trevor winners and welcome back to 62nd script school. Now that you're aware of the seven major genres, hopefully you've figured out your genre. If not, that's okay, I've got you covered. Today we're gonna be talking about finding your genre and knowing your brand. 60 seconds on the clock hit. When I was working at innovative artists, we represented a young writer by the name of Stuart Beatty.
We were trying to figure out how to brand and when he came to us and said, I went to Disneyland and I went on this ride Pirates of the Caribbean. I liked it so much. I wrote a script about it. Well, I said, I love that ride. Can I read the script? Of course, it was amazing.
While we're in the process of getting Disney to sign off on the rights, we jumped at the opportunity to brand Stewart. We literally called him the pirate guy. You want a pirate script? We got the pirate script. You like pirates. We got the pirate guy.
You need a pirate character. We got the guy who writes the best pirates pirates. Pirates pirates. So obviously Disney signed off Bruckheimer came on board, Johnny Depp got involved and the rest is history. So based off of Stewart being the pirate guy, we were able to get him a lot more opportunities in that genre of Action, Adventure and thriller. He went on to write and sell collateral with Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx, which is an action adventure thriller.
He wrote derailed with Clive Owen and Jennifer Aniston, which is also an action thriller, and he wrote GI Joe Rise of Cobra with Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon Levitt, which is an action adventure. So you get the idea show business is business, we created a brand for Stuart that made him more marketable as a writer, You too must create a brand for yourself. Here's a little exercise to help you figure out your genre. I know we all want to be the Coen brothers and work in every single genre and kill it. But we have to choose a specific genre and brand ourselves at least in the beginning. Name the top 10 TV Shows of All Time.
Remember guilty pleasures are good. Now list the genre of those shows. If you don't know the genre, look it up online, possibly imdb.com. That's Internet Movie Database. The genre that comes up most often on your list is your favorite genre, and the genre that inspires you the most should be your genre. Okay, good luck and happy genre hunting.
