It's time to look at an example then, let's consider the fictitious company Danny designs. Now Danny designs as a medium sized interior design business, offering private customers and businesses interior improvements, including kitchens, bathrooms, curtains and carpets. The business is successful. But the market is becoming increasingly fickle. Some of the standard templates that they apply to their work are no longer valid. And the team realized that they need to innovate to retain existing customers and to attract new ones.
So the company is formed an innovation team and reviewed all aspects of their business, including products and markets, business processes, workplace engagement, and business models. And they've identified a number of issues on which they feel they should focus their initial innovation efforts. These are shown on the next slide. they've identified the area for innovation, the issue the problem and the stakeholders who are affected It. So under products and markets, they've identified that there are delays of many weeks between design and fitting for customers and its customers that are affected. They've also identified that there's failure to keep up with trends for fixtures and fittings, particularly with the Internet of Things.
And after gain affects customers in terms of business processes, they've identified that they lack skilled staff in some areas, particularly new technologies and fittings, and this affects customers. they've identified that the customer credit check process is weak and open to risk of fraud. And they've identified that there's poor training for new staff and outdated working instructions, which affects employees in terms of workplace engagements. The team found that customer service was sometimes poor, and there was a lack of diversity in the workforce to match customer needs. This affected the owners of the business and the employees and for business models, the team felt themselves have partnerships with businesses whose products and services they might complement. And this affected both owners and customers.
Based on these issues, my question to you is, what ideas do you have for innovation for this company? Well, I share the ideas that I've had for innovation at Danny designs on the following slide for the problem of delays of many weeks between design and fitting. The ideas for innovation are to recruit more skilled fitters, and to provide better tools to schedule and plan project resources. For the problem of failure to keep up with trends for fixtures and fittings, particularly the Internet of Things. There are two ideas for innovation. Firstly, to create a role in the marketing team to review the latest products, and next to partner with a fittings manufacturer to offer the latest products for the problem of the lack of skilled staff in some areas, notably new technologies and fittings.
Then the ideas for innovation are to recruit to technologically aware electricians, and to create a web portal for customers to view the products. For the issue of customer credit check and financing processes. being weak and open to risk of fraud. We have to review and strengthen the process with guidance from our accountants. For the problem of poor training for new staff and outdated working instructions, we have to develop a new induction and training package and to revise the working instructions for the issue of customer service sometimes being poor and the lack of diversity in the workforce to match customer needs. We have to revise recruitment procedures, and the arenas in which we advertise for staff.
And finally, for the lack of partnerships with businesses whose products or services we might complement. The idea for innovation is to identify suitable partners research their offering An open talks with the most suitable businesses. Now I've numbered each of these ideas for innovation, so that I can present them on the innovation grid relatively straightforwardly. And we see that on the next slide, the idea numbers are issued there. So most of the ideas fit into the easy to implement a large potential benefit arena with a couple that fit into the easy to implement, but with small potential benefits, and two ideas for innovation that fit into the hard to implement that have large potential benefit. So all those ideas that are easy to implement and have small potential benefit, they are in the just do it category, we can implement them straightaway.
There's relatively little cost or effort involved to improve those activities and processes. The two ideas of recruiting more skilled fitters and recruiting technologically aware electricians, they are potentially hard to implement, potentially costly, though the benefit is large, but they will Quite a more detailed cost benefit analysis because of the amount of investment involved. So we see then for Danny designs that we've used a fairly simple structure to come up with a dozen ideas for innovation, many of them easy to implement, and we're ready to start on our innovation journey.
