Hi, I'm Jim McCall. Welcome to ultimate drumming calm. This lesson is going to be about eighth note fills. What I'm going to be doing is playing both hands in unison as I move around the drumset. First I'm going to play it for you, and then I'm going to break it down and show you how it works. In order to play this great sounding Phil, you need to count eighth notes.

Eighth notes are one and two and three and four and now I'm playing both hands in unison. However I'm separating the hands on Play and one hand on one drum The other hands playing on another drum. I'm going to count eighth notes and play on everything that I say, each time I repeat a measure, I'm going to move to a different drum. In other words, each time I get to one, I'm going to be on a different drum. It's going to be like this one, and two, and three, and four. Now I'm going to spice this up a little bit by adding the bass drum, the bass drum is going to go on the numbers only.

And it's going to coordinate with the hands. One and two, and three and four, and one. Now to make it even more Interesting, I'm going to add a crescendo within each measure. So in other words, I'm going to start on the one fairly quiet and then I'm going to gradually increase the volume till I get to the end of the measure. When I start on the next one, I'm going to be soft again and gradually increase the volume till I get to the next measure. So it's going to work like this.

One, and two, and three, and four. Now once you get comfortable with this pattern, it's a good idea to practice it with a rock beat. So I'm going to play four measures rock beat, four measures, Phil. Now as I move through this exercise, I'm going to try mixing the hands up a little bit moving in different directions and using different drums so I can explore some of the possibilities of what you can do with this cool sounding fill.
