The key to being a good teacher online is interactivity. You have to ask a lot from your students. It cannot simply be a lecture. Otherwise, they might as well just watch a YouTube video. You've got to give homework, you've got to give assignments you've got to test. Now, every subject matter is different.
So there are different ways of doing it. A lot of people like multiple choice tests. A lot of people have other quizzes. A lot of people give homework writing assignments if you're teaching people how to write or some other intellectual body of content now for what I do, teaching people how to speak. I'm constantly asking people to video record themselves, watch it and critique themselves. That's the number one way I have testing because I found that's really the only way to help people gain confidence in skill and their ability to teach, train speak.
Talk to the media, but your subject matter is different. But I have to stress you need to constantly be asking questions, rhetorical questions, real questions of your students, give them ways to participate, give them homework assignments, quiz them, test them. It's virtually impossible to be too interactive. As long as it seems like there's a purpose if it's just random and it seems like busywork, students will rebel against that. But the more you can interact with your students in a meaningful way, the better and certainly that includes answering emails, being a part of any discussion group online as a part of the class. So think now about where you're going to ask your students, your trainees questions.
