I want to talk just a moment about the technology needed to create internet videos. Now, we could spend five hours in a course on all the technology aspects. Don't waste your time obsessing over the technology. If you are reacting to breaking news and you have an insight, a perspective of commentary, there's nothing wrong with walking down the street quickly capturing a video on your cell phone, posting it to your blog, posting it to your Facebook page, emailing it to every reporter and producer you can find if you've got great content, interesting insights, a good perspective and it's newsworthy, no one's going to care about the technology and the production values as long as they can see you and hear you. Now I've got a little bit of a fancier studio right here but I'm just in a closet. This is a six by nine foot closet I'm in that I've turned into my studio and for many years all over did was use a simple webcam.
So if you don't have a webcam, go to the grocery store and get a $15 webcam, put it on your computer and just make sure you don't have anything distracting behind you. You don't want a window behind you and you want more light in front of you rather than behind you. If you're using a laptop, elevate it, put it on a stack of books, so that it is roughly I level the camera with your eye level. And then to make it a little better, better audio. Go to Radio Shack and get a $10 lav mic This is a lav mic rather than using the mic built in. If you just do that your video quality will be fine because I'm warning it you can spend weeks months I've seen people spend years obsessing about which camera, the lights the bat, it just doesn't matter for Do It Yourself public relations.
Using internet video, if you want to be a TV star and sell your video to Hollywood for millions of dollars, sure, you've got to worry about all that. That's not what this course is about. So purposely being very brief here on the technology because I think it's the least important part of do it yourself PR using video. The main thing is that you create video quickly, easily, confidently and you get it up and out. If you're really interested in more, I'll put in the Resource Center information I have on your own Do It Yourself studio that will be in the bonus section of this website. And that can tell you other aspects of the technology.
Plus you can always just go to the local video store that sell you know your your version of a bnh video that we have here in New York City and someone can come set it up for you for not that much money, but you don't have to You can just use a simple webcam one's probably already on your computer. You could just use your cell phone if you want to. So please I beg you Don't obsess over the technology.
