So here's a question I frequently get from authors. How often should you mention your book because we've all seen or heard authors on talk shows where it's well buy my book, buy my book, it's on Amazon right now. It's 995. And the problem is, that can't be one of your messages. Simply I have a book, and this is the title and this the price, and here's where you get it. That's not a message.
A message has to be something interesting to the audience. Tell me something interesting. If I'm an audience member, I'll seek out your book. I'll track it down. I'll make the effort to look for it. But your message can't be every 30 seconds and buy my book and the title of it is certainly you want to encourage the host or the interviewer to mention the book.
And if you're on a talk show set, especially talk radio, you can ask the host Hey, do you mind mentioning the name of the book Perhaps the beginning or the end, if you can organically mention the name of your book once, if you're in a standard wive five minute interview, I think that's fine. If you come back to it again and again Again, that's a big problem. Now the big problem for most people is not that they mentioned the name of the book too often, it's that they never mentioned it. You've got to mention it for any kind of live interview. Three, four or five minute interview that you would have on a morning local talk show or a Good Morning America or today's show. You really do need to mention it once in a way that is organic, it's not and you can buy my book it can't be seen as a as a pure plug.
It has to be worked into the organic conversation. Talk Radio is a slightly different matter because there's still a lot of talk radio shows where a guest is on for a full hour. But here's the thing most research shows that the audience's for talk radio changed. Every 15 minutes. So if you wait till the end of the whole hour before you mentioned the name of your book or before the host does, you've lost a whole lot of people. So I would recommend, certainly every 15 minute chunk top of the hour to quarter after quarter after to the bottom of the hour, mentioning your book and letting people know where they can get certainly if you're in a town and you're doing a book signing.
And you're doing a local talk radio show or TV show mentioned the name of that local bookstore, they'll love you and you want to drive people to the event so they'll meet you hear you speak and buy your book. So don't have all the bashful about mentioning a local book signing but beyond that. Try to encourage the host or the reporter to mention the name of your book. And if it's any kind of live show, mention it once if it's a five minute interview, and certainly don't let more than 10 or 15 minutes Go by for a talk radio show without mentioning the book and just reminding people that it's in this bookstore or they can get it on Amazon today.
