What do you do if you have to give a meeting interview any language that is not your native language. Now this is understandably scary. It's nerve racking. And full disclosure. I've never done one of these stupid, ugly Americans who only speaks one language, I apologize. But I do work with people all over the globe who are giving interviews and language is not their first language.
And it's often the source of insecurity. So I can certainly understand why I'd be petrified if I had to give an interview in a foreign language. But that's primarily because I don't speak any other languages. Here's the secret though, for a lot of people that they don't know. It's actually easier to do an interview in a foreign language if you have the basic fundamentals of that language and a working vocabulary of a couple thousand words. Because you don't have as large a vocabulary as a native speaker.
It's easier for you to use simple words, understandable words, short words, that makes it easier for the audience to understand you. Don't try to search for the perfect word. Don't try to memorize. Don't try to sound smart to focus on your idea. Use the simplest words that come to you. And generally you'll be fine.
If you're worried about people understanding you, I would try to speak a little louder than usual. It just can't hurt people understanding you if you speak a little bit louder, because sometimes when people get nervous or they're shy, or they're insecure, the tendency is to sort of shrink up. And then you think, well, if I speak softly, no one can hear my mistake. Big problem. If people can't hear you, you have destroyed the ability to communicate, they won't understand you. The other big problem people have is speaking too quickly.
If you're nervous about speaking in a language not your first, it's natural to speak faster than normal. But that is a big problem because it's harder to understand. And you'll come across as nervous. And people simply will not process your words as well because you're flattening them out when you speed. So my advice, focus on the simplest ideas, use the simplest words that come to you speak a little louder than usual. And a little slower than usual do that and you won't have any problems.
