The first thing you have to decide when you're going to do a podcast is, what is the subject going to forget formats? We'll get to that later. What are you actually going to talk about? Now? There's no right or wrong answer in general, you can have a podcast on any subject in the world. And that's the beauty of reaching people through the internet is it's a big world out there.

Billions are connected. And you may have a podcast just on counting the wings on the tsetse fly. Nothing I'd want to listen to but maybe out of billions and billions of people in the world on the internet, there are 5000 people who want to listen to that. Here's the main thing you really have to focus on when you're coming up with a topic. What is the stuff that you already talked about? You need something that you're passionate about, that you're comfortable and fluid talking about?

It really just doesn't work to say to yourself, hmm, how can I be Make money and find a big audience. Oh, I know. foreign currency trading is hot right now, I don't know much about it. But I read a couple of books. And I'm going to do a daily podcast on foreign currency trade. Just does it work anytime I've ever seen someone even attempt that they have failed miserably.

You need something where you're already doing the reading the research Now it may be that you haven't read a book in years. And you spend every single second on your fantasy football game and you love giants football, you know the stats of every single player and how many points they scored in high school. I wouldn't want to listen to that, but you know what someone might so you should do a podcast just on giants football, and you might be able to reach a large audience for that. So you got to figure out what is your true path. Now this is important for a couple of reasons. Number one, you're not going to have a lot of money most likely for professional writers to write a whole lot of script for you.

So you need to be able to have things you can just say because you're already thinking about it, you're already talking about number two. As you begin your podcast, you're not going to have some huge large audience, most likely, you might not have any audience. So you need something that you can really sink your teeth into and talk about just because you love talking about it. Even if you don't have a huge response, even if you don't have 1000 fan emails or postings every single month, even if advertisers are not flocking to you, you need to have something that you're already talking about. If someone pulled the microphone away and said you could never podcast again, you would still want to talk about that for hours every week. That is what I believe, is the best way to go about picking a topic now.

If you say well, I'm interested in news, let me do a podcast about the news. You could do that. But I think you're far better off picking something that's a smaller niche, a narrower niche and really going deep. Now, if you want to do a podcast, just about news in your neighborhood or in your condo, or in your retirement village, that's something that would generate interest, because you could be delivering information that people couldn't get anyplace else. But if you just want to do national international news, and you're summarizing what's in the newspapers already, or what's on the New York Times, it's hard to really see the value of that unless you're giving very pointed, insightful commentary or opinion. There is ample room for people who are giving commentary and opinion so that's really the first thing you've got to decide is, what's the actual topic of your podcast.

And then you need to stick with it if it's just TJ his mind and everything. Single Day I do the podcast every single week. It's something completely different and there's no unifying strand. It might be very hard for anyone to ever figure out what's going on. And you might not ever get a single listener twice, or you won't get them back that third time. Ultimately, not everything is decided on ratings.

And you're not doing this presumably as a full time job yet, although some people do. But you do want at least the potential to reach a larger audience. Otherwise, you could just have a dinner party and worry about the microphone and uploading it to various sites, you could just have conversation with friends. So I do think that you need to go into this with the idea of reaching some community of people who care about the stuff you talked about. So that's your first assignment. Think about it and write down in one sentence or less.
