You may think of yourself first and foremost as an author, you may have put years and years of effort toil energy into this book that may be your source of pride. That's great. That's wonderful. But please realize the media is not looking for more authors. So your book can be part of the hook part of the package part of your credentialing. But that's not what you should be pushing regularly to the media you should be pushing, not your authorship but your expertise.
The media is always looking for good experts who can dissect the news and make the news meaningful to their readers, their viewers, their listeners. So if you've gone on a major talk show or local talk show newscast, and you've had a book launch, that's great, that's wonderful. And they may be talked about your book and reviewed it. But what do you do when you leave? It changes people Hey, thanks a lot. I may have a book out in four years, I'd love to come back.
Sure, come back. That can't be it. What you need to do is really push the idea that you're the expert. So if you've written a book on personal finance, let them know that you're happy to come back anytime to talk about personal finance. And in fact, Congress is going to vote on an issue that affects personal finance and 401 K's next week, you'd be happy to give them an analysis by email and call them up five minutes after the legislation passes or fails next week. Always be looking for opportunities to share your expertise with the media, the more you can make your expertise available to them useful to them valuable to them, then the more likely they are to mention your book.
Here, the beginning and the middle of the story somewhere. Everyone will win. So please realize your value too. The media is not as an author, your value is an expert. And you've got to constantly show your expertise by analyzing new news events, new information, new research that comes in that relates to your expertise. Do that.
And you'll be getting a lot of airtime regularly the next week, the next year, for decades, that's really the way to sell books.
