Do you actually enjoy talking about your area of expertise? This is important because if you're going to be a freelancer for more than a couple of years, your friends, your family, colleagues, clients, ideally, everyone will start to associate you with that topic. And it's going to be what you talk about when you introduce yourself at a cocktail party. I've been at countless networking events, cocktail parties, dinner parties, where once people know who I am, they can't resist asking me. So what did you think of that politicians press conference today? What did you think of that state of the union address?
Now? If I were in a niche that I had just picked for money, and I didn't really like about it? My attitude would be Oh, God, we had to talk about this. I thought I was here to relax or, Oh, you want me to give you advice for free? Come to my office or call me? That's not my response.
My response is I love talking I can't resist talking about It countless times people want to talk to you, oh, I'm fearful of speaking I get nervous in front of large crowds. I just go right in and give them the same advice is if they had hired me for a day at full fee. Now, I don't do a full training for eight hours in front of them at a cocktail party, I may give them the three minute version. But the point is, I enjoy talking about it. I like talking about it. At some point, you may have met a doctor and and seemed someone asked him, Hey, I got this itch here.
And you can tell the doctors like oh my god, I thought I was off the clock. You know, come to my office if you want diagnosis, don't ask ask for a free diagnosis. We've all seen people like that. And I can understand that might get tedious, but I think for a freelancer, you're so much better off finding a niche in a subject that you love talking about that you would talk about for free over time, which you'll find is not every day it's not going to be your primary marketing method. But prospects client sometimes good clients will come to you just because you were sharing your expertise because someone wanted your opinion
