First big marketing question you have to answer is, what in fact, is your marketplace? Is it just your town? Is it just your neighborhood? Nothing wrong with that if you do it well? Is it your city, your state, your county, your country, your continent? Or is it the globe?
There's no right or wrong answer one perfect answer, but you need to give it real thought. Because if you're trying to market to the whole globe, and the only one who ever hires you, is within two miles of you. It's a tremendous amount of wasted time, energy and effort. On the other hand, if you're selling a highly specialized service, it may be that you'd be much more successful selling it to the whole world than to your town. I was talking just the other day to my wife, she's saying, when's the last time you did a training in Long Island because I actually went Live in Long Island, New York. And I thought to myself, am I it's been years now this is a population area that with millions in it bigger than some countries.
I'm here I market myself. And yet I've done more days of training in Thailand in the last year than the last 10 years in Long Island. I 10 more days of training in Beirut, Lebanon. And the last couple years then in the last 10 years of Long Island. Would it be nice if I did a lot of work right here. Now in fairness, I do work in New York City, which is the nearest big urban center.
But still it'd be nice if I did it in Long Island. But here's the thing if I only marketed myself to the geographic area where I am based the 30 miles in any direction, I'd starve to death and yet I market myself to the whole world. Thank you very nice living now with what I do. public speaking. Speaking of the media, it's universal. It's not regulated.
It's not dependent on any laws, the principles I have, frankly helped people anywhere. And there is a marketplace for that people are willing to fly trainers to other cities, countries and continents. your niche may be a little different. Obviously, if you're a legal expert, here legal expertise in one country's laws will not necessarily help somebody in another country in another legal system. If you are a yoga trainer, it may be that the only people who hire you are local, but develop a new technique, some new version of Bikram yoga or hot yoga or some new version, you may get followers all over the world. They may want to fly you for a retreat in India.
You know now so I need you to give real thought. Decide right now. Are you going to be local, regional, countrywide or worldwide because it's going to affect everything else about how you market yourself.
